The championship game in the Monticello tournament Friday proved to be a battle of staunch defenses.

Ultimately, a goal in the 68th minute by Adam Tebbs gave Southwest Christian the cushion they needed to defeat Willmar, 1-0.

“We played an outstanding game. That was a good defensive battle,” said Cardinals head boys soccer coach Jeff Winter. “Their goal was a good goal. They’re a tough team and we hung right with them. The guys were down after losing but they got nothing to hang their heads about.

“We’re going to have a good season judging by the first two games.”

Leighton Winter came up with 10 saves in the loss while Willmar out-shot Southwest Christian 12-11.

On Tuesday, the Cardinals are on the road to play their first Central Lakes Conference match of the year against St. Cloud Apollo.
