Former Port Jervis resident

Bradenton, FLa. — Elsie E. Bisland, 89, of Bradenton, formerly of Port Jervis, N.Y., died Feb. 6, 2009, in Florida.

She was born April 22, 1919, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of August and Anna Carlson Sjoquist.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol O'Neill of Bradenton; two sisters, Alice Westfall of Port Jervis, and Edith Nemeth of Boston; two stepsons, Roger Bisland of Glen Spey, N.Y., and Alfred Bisland of Panama City, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Bernard O'Neil and Edward Bisland Jr.

Spring interment will take place at Glen Spey Cemetery, Glen Spey.

Memorial services will be announced.

Cuddebackville — Brandon Scot Canter, infant son of Jeremy and Natisha Skinner Canter of Cuddebackville, was born and died Feb. 8, 2009, at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis.

In addition to his parents, at home, he is survived by a brother and sister, Nathaniel and Alexandrea, at home; maternal grandparents, Richard and Debra Skinner of Cuddebackville; maternal great-grandparents, Ernestus and Betty Skinner of Cuddebackville, Lucille Brewer of Linden, Texas, and Carol Weir of San Marcos, Calif.; paternal grandparents, Elizabeth Meeks of Paducah, Ky., and Connie Lee Canter of Symsonia, Ky.; paternal great-grandparents, William Meeks of Possum Trot, Ky., and Barbara Meeks of Paducah, Ky.; and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services were private.

Burnsville, N.C. — Cynthia Warner Kelder, 84, died Feb. 6, 2009, in Burnsville.

Cynthia was the daughter of Nial S. and Elma Wickham Warner of Matamoras, Pa.

Cynthia was the widow of William R. Kelder.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane Burckley and her husband, George, of Burnsville; a son, William Kelder of Asheville; six grandchildren, Denise Collier, Annette Burkley, Noah Wofford and his wife, Lyndsey, Tara Kelder, and Dwight and Darrell Chiles; six great-grandchildren, Logan, Jasmine, Seth, Brandon, Mary and David; two nieces, Carol Ruh of Matamoras and Kathy Ruh of Milford, Pa.; and a nephew, Alan Warner of Allentown, Pa.

She was predeceased by her brother, Nial Warner.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the Yancy Funeral Home, Burnsville, with a Celebration of Life service at 2 p.m.

Barryville — Clara V. Schmalzle, 85, of Barryville, died Feb. 11, 2009, at Milford Senior Care Facility, Milford, Pa.

She was born Nov. 16, 1923, in Dunmore, Pa., the daughter of Matthew H. Vollmer and Hazel B. Swendsen Vollmer.

Clara was the widow of Lewis J. Schmalzle; they were married for more than 60 years.

She was a retired home economics and health teacher for Eldred Central School, Eldred.

Clara was a member of the Barryville United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and was a lay preacher of the church.

She was a member and past matron of River Valley Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star No. 33, Port Jervis; 20-year member of the Sullivan County Association of Home Economics Teachers; member of the New York State United Teachers Association, the International Skamper Camper Club; and a life member of the Yulan Rod and Gun Club.

A family statement read, "Mom loved to sew, cook, hunt, fish, and go camping; above all her family was most important to her."

She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Barnes and her husband, Larry, of Gouldsboro, Maine, and Ginny Dudko and her husband, William, of Sparrowbush; her son, Donald L. Schmalzle, and his wife, Cindy, of Ellenville; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Tricia, Amy and Laura; five great-grandchildren, David, Colin, Moira, Waylon and Norah; two brothers, Cecil Vollmer of Jacksonville, Fla., and Paul Vollmer of Dunnellon, Fla.; her sister Carol Swingle of Ann Arbor, Mich., and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Vera Balfantz.

Visitation and Eastern Star services were held Friday at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, Port Jervis. Funeral services were Saturday at the Barryville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Linda Bohs officiating.

Interment was private.

U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II

Matamoras, Pa. — William C. Shatt, 86, of Matamoras, died Feb. 9, 2009, at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis.

He was born Jan. 7, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Boltisheitis Shatt.

Bill proudly served our country during World War II with the U.S. Army Air Force.

He was a retired airplane mechanic for small aircraft and an inspector. He owned and operated Square Wheel Specialty Co. in Sussex, N.J.

He was a member of the D&H Square Dancers.

A family statement read: "Bill was an avid aviator from the age of 19 until he was 85; he flew for 66 years. His plane, 'Raggedy Ann,' won many awards and was featured in Air Progress Magazine."

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Leffever Shatt, at home; his son, Michael W. Shatt, and his wife, Ellen, of Dingman Township; two daughters, Susan S. Hacker and Carol A. Washer and her husband, Robert, all of Belvidere, N.J.; two brothers, John Shatt of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Joseph Shatt of Green Valley, Ariz.; his sister, Mildred Olshevski, of Willingboro, N.J.; six grandchildren, Kimberlie, Kelly, Jason, Daniel, Jeffrey and Sara; three great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Danielle and Kieran; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Saturday at the Hope Evangelical Free Church, Matamoras, with the Rev. Jack Kroeze officiating.

Interment was private.

Matamoras, Pa. — Joan Marie Vliet, 80, of Matamoras, died Feb. 16, 2009, at St. Joseph's Place, Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, N.Y.

She was born May 14, 1928, in Washington, N.J., the daughter of Joseph and Hilda Morris Sherry.

She was the widow of Lewis Vliet; they were married for 49 years.

A longtime resident of Sparta, N.J., and New Bern, N.C., she resided with her daughter Lisa and her family in Matamoras for the past few years.

Joan was a graduate of Hackettstown High School and Centenary Junior College. She was a retired librarian, working for the Sparta Public Library for many years, and a past member of the Newton Country Club.

In addition to her daughter Lisa and her husband, Michael, of Matamoras, she is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Mongiovi, and her husband, Joseph, of Wilson, N.C., her son, James Vliet, and his wife, Carmen, of Centereach, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel, Daniel and Jessica Mongiovi, Bryan, Joseph, and Dana Hunt, Austin Vliet, Chrystal Bell and Robert Miranda; two great-grandsons, Frank Gould and Mitchell Conklin; two sisters, Betty Broere and her husband, John, and Peggy Sherry; her brother Joseph Sherry and his wife, Louise; a sister-in-law, Louise Sherry; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother Bill Sherry.

A Mass of Resurrection was held Thursday at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Matamoras, with the Rev. August Ricciardi as celebrant.

Interment will take place in New Bern Memorial Cemetery, New Bern.
