Walmart has recalled a Better Homes and Gardens-branded Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones due to the potential presence of a rare and deadly bacteria, the U.S. Consumer Safety Product Commission (CPSC) announced Friday.
Public health officials are investigating two deaths and four illnesses stemming from the potential contamination with the bacteria, the agency said.
The CPSC said that Walmart is recalling approximately 3,900 bottles of Walmart’s Better Homes and Gardens-labeled Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones because of a rare and dangerous bacteria called Burkholderia pseudomallei found inside the aromatherapy bottles.
The harmful bacteria is known to cause a condition called melioidosis, a rare condition that can be fatal, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC is investigating four confirmed cases of melioidosis in four different states - including Georgia, Texas, Kansas and Minnesota, according to the CPSC.
The CDC is also warning consumers who may have the affected product in their homes to immediately stop using the spray, not open the bottle or throw it away, and return the product to any Walmart store in clear, double-bagged Ziploc bags placed inside a small cardboard box.
Those who return the affected products to Walmart will receive a $20 Walmart gift card, according to the CPSC.
