Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) has found a friend in a very high place in tonight’s Peaky Blinders finale – and joins forces with Winston Churchill in his battle against Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin).

As Tommy prepares to assassinate Mosley in the middle of a rally, Churchill seeks out the South Birmingham MP to see what’s going on with his involvement in the British Union of Fascists.

Seemingly discovering that Tommy is only there to scope out Mosley and take him down from the inside, Churchill gives him his blessing.

Sitting in the Westminster chambers, Churchill bonds with Tommy over their time at war and tells him: ‘I have no doubts that there was once a time in Flanders when you were under the ground, and I was above it, both working to the same end.

‘We are in the same exact situation here in Westminster. Do what you have to do, Mr Shelby. And if you need anything, call me.’

Churchill seems to be particularly curious with the goings on of the Peaky Blinders – but not necessarily in a bad way.

He even seems impressed when he quizzes Tommy on the death of Inspector Campbell (Sam Neill) back in season two… and Tommy reveals it was actually Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory) who killed him.

‘I really must come up to Birmingham some day and spend an evening with your family,’ he told him.  ‘They sound interesting.’

Oh, Winston – you don’t even know the half of it, love.

Tonight’s episode will see Tommy and the Shelby boys try and take down fascist leader Oswald Mosley once and for all

However, there’s a lot of space to go wrong, and there’s every chance not everyone will make it out alive…

There’s a lot of things that need to be wrapped up, though somehow we think we’re going to be left hanging over some of it til the show returns for season six.

Peaky Blinders season 5 concludes tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
