Teenager on bike killed in northern Michigan community of East Tawas

EAST TAWAS, MI — A teenage bicyclist died after having been struck by a pickup truck in Iosco County.

About 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31, troopers from the Michigan State Police West Branch Post responded to a personal-injury crash at the intersection of U.S. 23 and Tawas Beach Road in East Tawas.

They arrived to find a 16-year-old male had been riding his bicycle on the sidewalk. As he was crossing the road in the crosswalk, a northbound 2019 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by a 62-year-old East Tawas man turned right onto Tawas Beach Road and struck the bicyclist.

First responders pronounced the teen deceased at the scene. He was a student at Oscoda High School, troopers report.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the collision and are not disclosing additional details.

West Branch troopers were assisted on the scene by the East Tawas Fire Department and the Iosco County Sheriff Department.
