Happy Holidays! Here are 40+ festive events (some virtual!) taking place around Louisville

It's the holiday season — which means it's time to deck the halls and trim those trees. There are more than 40 events taking place across the city this holiday season, many virtually, that are sure to put you in a festive mood. (And who couldn't use a little holiday cheer in a year like 2020?)

In light of the pandemic and rise in COVID-19 cases, be sure to follow any mask protocols or social distancing requirements for any of these holiday events in and around Louisville. 

So, happy holidays, everyone. May we all find a bit of the spirit of the season in these events:

CHRISTMAS EVENTS IN LOUISVILLE

Lights Under Louisville

What: The 30-minutes drive through the winding cavern includes over 40 themed displays, nine mapping projections, approximately 850 lit characters and over 5 million points of light

  • Christmas Express: 30-minute day time tour through the light show in an open top trailer. The loading procedures will help with social distancing. 27th Annual Southern Lights Holiday Festival

What: A three-mile drive through a dazzling holiday light display. After the tour, guests can enjoy a free petting zoo, train ride and meet-and-greet with Santa. Presented by Friends of Coal.

2nd Annual Fête De Noël: Winter Holiday Festival and Ice Skating

'Rudolph’s Run' Scavenger Hunt to Save Christmas

What: Danger Run will present a Christmas version of its classic Halloween scavenger-hunt-style game played 100% in the car. Participants will go on an adventure solving clues, exploring decorated homes and Christmas light displays around town. The object of the game is to complete Santa’s Christmas List, which has been destroyed. If you beat the game and save Christmas, you will be entered for prizes. The game ends at an outdoor holiday market and ice skating rink.

Winter Woods Spectacular

The Louisville Parks Foundation's Winter Woods Spectacular held in Iroquois Park runs Nov 27, 2020 - Jan 2, 2021

What: Drive through this half-mile Winter Wonderland that has millions of twinkling lights and accompanying sounds. Proceeds to benefit the Louisville Parks Foundation.

Yuletide at Yew Dell

What: An enhanced light display with photo opportunities on the lighted path, shopping, take-home craft for kids and Santa at Yew Dell Botanical Gardens. Presented by Commonwealth Bank & Trust Company and T-Mobile.

Christmas Village and Presley Tyler House Tour

What: Features a 60-piece 1930’s Thomas Kinkade Christmas Village and tour the  Presley Tyler House.

Winter Illuminations Trail Walk

What: Winter Illuminations takes guests on a one-of-a-kind illuminated trail walk at The Parklands of Floyds Fork. Take a 1-mile walking tour through the illuminated forest that features more than 10 light installations complemented by festive music.

14th Annual Holiday Victorian Tea

The 12 Days of Christmas Tea Collection is $12.85.

What: Due to COVID-19, instead of an in-person tea, The Conrad-Caldwell House is offering a takeaway tea to share at home. Sip on traditional teas and nibble on tea sandwiches and treats crafted by Terri Lynn’s Catering while listening to the music of the NouLou Chamber Ensemble. Proceeds to benefit Conrad-Caldwell House Museum.

The Chamber of St. Matthews and the City of St. Matthews Holiday Light Decorating Competition

Christmas Lights

What: The Chamber of St. Matthews and the City of St. Matthews are presenting a holiday light decorating competition for residents and businesses in the St. Matthews area. Decorate the exterior parts of the home and yard and businesses, organizations and churches, the exterior of their buildings and property. Contestants will need to submit photos or a 20-30 second video clip of their displays, which will be used by judges to determine winners.

Whitehall’s Christmas Tea for Two To-Go

What: Features a boxed set of treats including scones, pastries and savory tea sandwiches, as well as Bigelow tea bags. Proceeds to benefit Whitehall Historic Home.

When: Boxes can be picked up Dec. 5, 2-4 p.m.

LIGHT UP EVENTS IN LOUISVILLE

Light Up Louisville

Downtown Louisville lights at the 38th annual Light Up Louisville Nov. 23, 2018.

What: Due to COVID-19, Light Up Louisville will be different this year. Santa, his elves and Frosty The Snowman will be coming to more than 20 neighborhoods around  Louisville to spread some Christmas cheer and to collect letters to be placed in Santa’s Mailbox. Christmas music will be playing, and a large mobile video screen will play highlights from previous Light Up Louisville events as Santa’s caravan drives through the selected neighborhoods. Presented by 106.9 Play FM, Neil Huffman Subaru, LG&E, AT&T and Light Up Louisville. Neighbors will also be invited to donate a new, unwrapped toy for the annual Toys for Tots drive.

  • Holiday lights will go up at Metro Hall and City Hall, and a brightly lit Christmas tree will be set up on the grounds of Metro Hall. The light display will include a rainbow of colors to celebrate Christmas, Kwanza and Hanukah, reflecting the diversity of the community.

35th Annual Bardstown Road Aglow

What:  Many of the popular celebrations may be scaled back at Bardstown Road Agow due to COVID-19 precautions, but the holiday lights, many festivities and seasonal discounts will continue. Features the lighting of the holiday tree with Santa Claus, WAVE3’s Connie Leonard and Kent Taylor in front of Wendy’s at Bardstown Road and Grinstead Drive (at a safe, social distance) at 6 p.m. Special discounts on festive food and drinks and merchandise at participating restaurants and shops along Bardstown Road, Baxter and Barret Avenues, and Douglass Loop. Live holiday music, thanks to the Louisville Federation of Musicians, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at several locations along Bardstown Road.

Shops and restaurants will also compete in the Window Wonderland Contest (#Wonderland2020) with cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners as well as the Instagram Photo Contest (#Aglow2020) sponsored by Murphy’s Camera. Elijah Craig will be featured in festive holiday cocktails.

Light Up St. Matthews

What: Due to COVID-19 things will be different for Light Up St. Matthews in 2020. There will be no spectators in the park for the lighting of the tree. The lighting ceremony will be broadcast live on the Light Up St. Matthews Facebook page. The winner of the Flip the Switch Coloring Contest for area kids will join the mayor and Santa to turn on the lights. The coloring contest is sponsored by Park Community Credit Union. You can walk through the festive displays before or after dark at the park, which is located at the corner of Browns Lane and Kresge Way.

Macy’s Santaland at Home

What: This year, Macy's Santaland will be an online holiday experience. Get ready to set off on a personalized, interactive journey to the North Pole to visit the one and only Santa and take a selfie. A special greeting from Santaland elves at the North Pole-bound train station kicks off the interaction. From there, the elves will lead the way through Santa’s Village and Workshop, stopping to see the sights and play interactive games. At the finale of the journey, kids will meet Santa through a whimsical interactive video.

JingleRing

What: Oxmoor Center’s virtual visits with Santa. A standard JingleRing visit includes up to three children. There is an additional fee per child over three with a limit of five children total. What: Have Breakfast with Santa that includes scrambled eggs, warm cinnamon rolls, mini Belgian waffles and much more while a socially distanced Santa roams the restaurant, interacting with the children.
