Treylon Burks OK after limping — plus other Tennessee Titans takeaways from Saturday

The Tennessee Titans returned to the practice field Saturday for the first time since their preseason-opening loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Here’s what stood out:

Treylon Burks limps; says he's fine

Rookie wide receiver Treylon Burks went down running a comeback route late in a two-minute drill at the end of practice. He got up limping and remained on the sideline for the final two plays.

Burks, a first-round draft pick, bent over a couple times, but a trainer never came over to him. He jogged to the middle of the field with the rest of his teammates at the end of practice.

Burks said he was fine afterward.

Kyle Philips shines in 2-on-2 drill

Fifth-round rookie Kyle Philips continued his strong training camp, flashing his crisp route running skills in a low red zone 2-on-2 drill, where space is tight. He scored three touchdowns in three reps, including wins against safety A.J. Moore Jr. and defensive back Shyheim Carter.

Philips only played three offensive snaps in Thursday’s game, an indication that the Titans already feel confident in his role.

Other highlights from the 2-on-2 drill:

  • Cornerback Caleb Farley and receiver Robert Woods, both of whom were kept out of one-on-one drills early in training camp, participated in the period, another sign in the right direction from their surgically repaired ACLs. Farley opened the drill with a pass breakup and Woods later scored a touchdown on undrafted rookie Tre Swilling

  • Receiver Cody Hollister had an impressive one-handed grab as he fell to the ground in the end zone

  • A miscommunication led to a wide-open Geoff Swaim in the back corner of the end zone

Vrabel sets objectives for Willis, Woodside moving forward

Coach Mike Vrabel indicated Friday the backup quarterback job is open. He said Saturday he’ll be looking closely at ball security, ability to run the offense, playmaking and operating the line of scrimmage with rookie Malik Willis and incumbent backup Logan Woodside in the upcoming joint practices against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Woodside’s two-interception performance in Thursday’s preseason game appeared to leave the door open for Willis in the QB2 competition.

Offense hot to start 7-on-7s

The offense scored four straight touchdowns to kick off a low red zone 7-on-7 drill. Tannehill connected with running back Dontrell Hilliard in the flat, then zipped a ball across the middle to tight end Austin Hooper, found a wide-open Hilliard in the flat again and finally hit Burks on a quick jailbreak screen.

Molden returns, Fulton sidelined

Second-year nickelback Elijah Molden returned after missing the last seven training camp practices and Thursday’s game in Baltimore, though he did not participate in 7-on-7 or team periods.

Cornerback Kristian Fulton was absent for the first time. He played 16 defensive snaps against the Ravens.

Others who didn’t practice included defensive lineman Denico Autry, outside linebacker Harold Landry, safety Amani Hooker, cornerback Roger McCreary, defensive back Chris Jackson and inside linebacker Dylan Cole.

Third-round rookie Nicholas Petit-Frere was wearing a noncontact yellow jersey.

Other highlights

Some other noteworthy plays from the day:

Low red zone 7-on-7s

  • Swilling had a pick-6 off Woodside.

  • Moore broke up a would-be touchdown pass to Swaim.

  • Linebacker Zach Cunningham broke up a Tannehill pass to Swaim at the goal line.

Red zone team period

  • Burks scored a nice touchdown running a post route with Cunningham in coverage.

  • Running back/special teamer Trenton Cannon made a one-handed grab for a touchdown.

2-minute drill (11-on-11)

  • Second-year wide receiver Dez Fitzpatrick scored a touchdown against the first-team defense. There was a miscommunication by the defense and he was wide open up the sideline
