MACOMB COUNTY, MI - Two inmates at a Michigan prison near Detroit may face new charges after authorities say the prisoners left makeshift mannequins in their bunk beds Saturday in what may have been an escape attempt.
The investigation at the Macomb Correctional Facility in New Haven, northeast of Detroit, began when a guard in one of the prison’s towers saw two inmates walking toward a fence while other inmates were headed inside to eat, according to the Associated Press.
This sparked an emergency inmate count, which led authorities to discover the homemade mannequins in the cells belonging to two prisoners. The inmates allegedly rolled up sheets to make them appear there was someone in the bunks.
They were found in the bunks of Chakaris Loury, 24, who is serving 25 years for assault with intent to commit murder, and Darious Culpepper, 27, who is serving eight years for armed robbery, the AP said.
The Macomb Correctional Facility sits on 100 acres. It can house about 1,400 inmates.
