Ironworker Falls 60 Feet To His Death At SoFi Stadium Site

INGLEWOOD, CA – An ironworker fell nearly 60 feet to his death from the roof while working on the roof at SoFi Stadium on Friday, which has temporarily stopped worked at the construction site of the future home of the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers.

A person who was briefed on the incident told The Los Angeles Times that the worker was working on the roof in the stadium’s southeast corner when he fell in an area near one of the large concrete columns that support the structure.

“This is an extremely sad day,” a spokesman for Turner-AECOM said in a statement issued by the general contractor. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues at this extremely difficult time. We work extremely hard to prevent days like this and we have halted all construction activity.”

This is the first known death of a worker during the stadium's construction, which began in November 2016.

Inglewood Police were called to the scene of the $5 billion construction site at around 11 a.m. on the report of an accident. No one else was injured at the site where construction has continued despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The Times reported that there have been 12 known confirmed cases of COVID-19 at the site, seven of which have occurred over the past eight days.

The stadium was to have hosted a Taylor Swift performance in July before Swift canceled the tour over coronavirus concerns. The Rams are scheduled to play a preseason game against the New Orleans Saints at the stadium on Aug. 14.
