There are very few times when you can get the chance to stay in the confines of a royal palace. With the debut opening of the Matild Palace, this week in Budapest, you might finally have a chance to do so. The 120-year old palace is now under Marriott's Luxury Collection, after undergoing five years of extensive renovations to transform into a luxe hotel with 130 guest rooms. Head designer Maria Vafiadis of MKV Design made sure to preserve Hungarian culture through her selection of remarkable decor, while local architects Puhl Antal and Péter Dajka were responsible for the hotel's structural reconstruction. The palace was built by the Austrian-Hungarian Duchess Cotilde of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1901 to serve as a social hub for the city of Budapest.
“We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone moment in the growth of The Luxury Collection brand with the opening of Matild Palace, a hotel that will define the destination of Budapest,” say Philipp Weghmann, Vice President and Global Brand Leader at the Collection, in a statement.“The property allows our guests to realize the fantasy of living within a royal palace, elevated with modern amenities and impeccable service, and we look forward to welcoming them as they discover this timeless and inspiring city.”
To add to the luxe factor, renowned celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck will be taking the helm of dinning operations at the Matild Palce. Each of the guest rooms feature high ceilings, handcrafted headboards, spa-style bathrooms, and fishbone parquet hardwood floors. Guests can choose from a selection of four general styles of rooms in the palace, all inspired by the lavish lifestyle of the Austrian Duchess.
If the royal-inspired rooms are not for you, there's also the option of staying in one of the 11 suites within the hotel. One of the largest of these, the Crown Suite, is split across four floors, features a 48-meter looking tower, and comprises a roomy primary bedroom and bathroom, study room and living room. Elegant chandeliers and handmade glass mosaics can be found throughout all of the interiors of the suite.
The starting rate for one of the guest rooms is €450 or around $533, which includes excludes a breakfast. Your royal quarters await you!
