(MENAFN- The Conversation) Associate Professor Narelle Lemon (DEd MEd BMus BTeach DipMan MAPP) is located at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia in the School of Social Sciences, Media, Film and Education holding the position of Associate Dean Education. Narelle is trained in the disciplines of arts, education and positive psychology. Narelle's overarching research area is focused on participation and engagement. She explores this through a variety of avenues including social media use for learning and professional development; creativity and arts education; and positive psychology specifically aimed at mindful practice and productive self-care strategies. She engages with creative pedagogies, visual narrative and narrative inquiry to investigate lived experiences.
She is interested in the lived experience of being an academic - care, collaboration, mindful and supportive practices. This has been explored through online identity with social media and the project called Academics Who Tweet, and through hearing the stories such as those of early career researchers (Lemon & Garvis, 2014), and the 2018 co-edited book with Springer that explores the way that academics understand, embrace and enact the concepts of mindfulness in approaching their work in demanding and dynamic environments (Lemon & McDonough, 2018). More recently Narelle has co-authored the books Building and Sustaining a Teaching Career: Strategies for Professional Experience, Wellbeing and Mindful Practice (Lemon & McDonough, 2020 with Cambridge University Press); Reframing and Rethinking Collaboration in Higher Education and Beyond: A Practical Guide for Doctoral Students and Early Career Researchers (Lemon & Salmon, 2020 as part of the Insider Guides to Success in Academia Series with Routledge); and Creative Research Methods in Education: Principles and Practices (Kara, Lemon, McPherson & Manny, 2021 with Policy Press). Narelle is also series editor of Wellbeing and Self-care in Higher Education: Emrbacing Postive Solutions (with Routledge).
Narelle has worked extensively with the Australian GLAM sector including Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum, National Gallery of Victoria, Australian National Maritime Museum, Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, Australia Museum, Shepparton Art Museum, State Library of Victoria, Heide Museum of Modern Art, and Ulumbarra Theatre. She worked on a three-year funded project with Castlemaine State Festival to promote arts and cultural awareness in regional young people. Narelle founded #MuseumEdOz on Twitter, an online discussion community that brings together Australian and international teachers, museums and museum educators for monthly tweet chats. She has been featured in the NMC Horizon Report > 2015 Museum Edition as a case study of education practice that brings together the GLAM sector, museum education, teacher education and social media.
She is an board member and Chair of the national health non for profit organisation Action for Happiness Australia, and Program Chair for the international special interest group (SIG) Holistic Education for American Educational Research Association (AERA). She is a previous executive board member of Arts Education Australia, and has previously been on the executive of the state board Arts Education Victoria. Narelle has also worked with the Creative Women's Circle, a national non-for-profit organisation that supports creative women in their business and entrepreneurial endeavours.
Narelle has received over $2.7 million worth of nationally competitive grants and awards. She has been successfully awarded research awards including: La Trobe University Mid-Career Researcher Excellence Award (2016); La Trobe University Early Career Researcher Excellence Award (2013); Early Career Supervisor with Most Publications Award within the School of Education, RMIT University (2012); and Early Career Researcher International Travel Award from RMIT Research and Innovation (2012). Narelle's contribution to the field has also been acknowledged through Swinburne Vice Chancellor Award in the team category of Diversity and Inclusion (2018) a national teaching citation in scholarship of learning and teaching for sustained development of curricula and resources to support the integration of social media into initial teacher education to benefit student learning and engagement as noted by 2019 National Teaching Citation awarded by Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT).
