Florida Coronavirus Deaths In Single Digits For Second Day

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida health officials reported 41 new hospitalizations from the new coronaviris on Monday as the number of new deaths remained in the single digits for a second straight day.

The state's death toll from the virus rose to 2,460 up from 2,451 a day earlier. Five Florida counties reported seven new deaths Monday compared to two on Sunday, 34 new deaths on Saturday, 49 new deaths Friday, 45 deaths Thursday, 61 deaths Wednesday, seven deaths Tuesday, 15 new deaths last Monday.

Monday was also the start of the 2020 hurricane season and Jared Moskowitz, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, told the Associated Press officials have a stockpile of 10 million masks set aside for storms and new partnerships with hotels, supermarkets and other vendors.

“Clearly, nobody has pandemic experience out there in hurricane season,” Moskowitz told the news agency. “Everything that we do will be affected in one way or another — big and or small —by COVID-19.”

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber urged his 90,000 residents not to let up on social distancing Monday and challenged critics who insist the coronavirus is no more deadly than the seasonal flu.

"I know many of you are frustrated and have let me know so," the mayor acknowledged in a video message emailed to residents. "Some are looking for a reason to abandon our efforts to control its spread."

Gelber included a video response from infectious disease professor Dr. Aileen Marti of Florida International university, who took on the critics directly: "The percent people who die from COVID-19 is a lot higher," Marti said of the seasonal flu. "It’s a much more complicated infection —and we do not have a vaccine — and we do not have a good antiviral."

State health officials reported a total of 56,830 total confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Monday, which represents an increase of 667 new cases over the previous 24-hour period throughout Florida.

Miami-Dade County, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, reported two new deaths Monday as did Polk County. Broward County reported one new death as did Pinellas County and Brevard County.
