FL Coronavirus Deaths Spike After 2 Days Of Modest Increases

After two straight days of single-digit deaths, Florida health officials reported 71 new deaths Tuesday from the coronavirus.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — After two straight days of single-digit deaths, Florida health officials reported 71 new deaths Tuesday from the new coronavirus, the most in any 24-hour period over the past week.

Nineteen Florida counties reported new deaths Tuesday compared to seven new deaths on Monday, two on Sunday, 34 new deaths on Saturday, 49 new deaths Friday, 45 deaths Thursday, 61 deaths Wednesday and seven deaths last Tuesday.

Health officials also reported 181 new hospitalizations over the previous 24-hour period. The state's total death toll from the virus rose to 2,530 from 2,460 a day earlier.

Miami-Dade reported 20 new deaths Tuesday. Palm Beach County reported 14 new deaths. Broward County reported three new deaths.

Pinellas County and Lee County each reported seven new deaths. Sarasota County reported three new deaths.

Charlottee County reported two new deaths as did Clay County, Hendry County and Pasco County.

Liberty County reported its first death from the virus. Escambia County reported one new death as did Gadsden County, Manatee County, Martin County, Osceola County, Polk County, St. Lucie County and Volusia County.

State health officials reported a total of 57,447 total confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Tuesday, which represents an increase of 667 new cases over the previous 24-hour period throughout Florida.

Miami-Dade reported 18,224 confirmed cases of the virus Tuesday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 7,248 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 6,219 cases.

Florida had a 5.5 percent positive test rate for the virus based on a total of 1,050,671 tests that had been administered as of Tuesday. The number of hospitalizations in Florida increased to 10,412 from 10,231 a day earlier.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 2,285 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 2,048 cases.
