Kit Harington spills about 'Game of Thrones' ending: 'I remember my mouth dropping open'

Spoiler alert: This story contains spoilers about the "Game of Thrones" series finale. 

Kit Harington is opening up about what went racing through his mind as he learned the controversial conclusion to "Game of Thrones."

Harington, who starred on the HBO fantasy series for all eight seasons, revealed to The Hollywood Reporter he was just as shocked at the series finale as fans were.

To recap: the ending of "Game of Thrones" saw Harington's character, Jon Snow, killing his love interest (and aunt) Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke.

The 32-year-old said he chose not to read the final script until the first cast read-through.

"I sat on a plane next to Emilia on the way to the read-through in Belfast, and she had read them already, and she was like, '(Expletive), Kit. You are in for some surprises,' " he said in the article published Friday. "That piqued my interest."

While reading the script aloud for the first time, Harington "didn't realize what was going to happen" until about half a page before the bloody twist.

"I remember my mouth dropping open and looking across Emilia at the table, who was slowly nodding as I went, 'No, no, no!' It was a 'holy (expletive)' moment," he said. "Jaw dropping."

According to Harington, he and Clarke shot their final scene together, which was about a page and a half of dialogue, over three weeks, in order to capture "every conceivable angle."

"With a highly emotionally charged scene like that, it's quite a lot, for everyone — the crew, me and Emilia" he said. "It was tiring. It's one of the hardest things we filmed."

Though fans may have had mixed reactions to the ending of "Thrones," in Harington's mind, the final scene, which saw Snow leading the Free Folk back into the true North, gave his character a fitting conclusion.

"I loved it. When I read it, that bit really made me cry. What really made me cry was on the paper: 'End of "Game of Thrones," ' " he said. "It felt like he was set free. It was a really sweet ending. As much as he had done a horrible thing (in killing Daenerys), as much as he had felt that pain, the actual ending for him was finally being released.
