The New England Patriots are gearing up to host the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football to kick off Week 6 of the 2019 NFL season. This game will mark the latest chapter in what has been a great modern rivalry. These foes are quite familiar with one another, famously battling in a pair of Super Bowls—XLII in 2008 and XLVI in 2012—that both went Big Blue’s way. However, this edition will look a bit different than it has over the last decade-plus, as it will be the first time that the G-Men won’t be starting quarterback Eli Manning under center. The 39-year-old signal-caller was replaced by Daniel Jones in Week 3, who has since led the Giants to a 2-1 record in his trio of starts. The rookie sensation—who came back to earth last week in a 28-10 defeat to the Minnesota Vikings—will now face the toughest test of his young career against the undefeated Patriots. Not only will Jones need to outduel future Hall of Famer Tom Brady, a player approximately 20 years his senior, but he’ll also have to navigate a defense that leads the league in yardage allowed, points conceded and interceptions to do so.

To say that the oddsmakers don’t like New York’s chances on Thursday Night Football would be understating it. The books opened the Giants as a 15-point underdog, but that line has since shifted to NE -17. These Week 6 odds are the longest that the organization has ever faced, eclipsing the 15.5-point spreads they faced in 1983 against the Washington Redskins and 1995 versus the San Francisco 49ers. Big Blue lost both times, but that doesn’t mean that they are hopeless in this one. They did manage to cover in each of those contests and have overcome long odds before. The Giants outright won as 13.5-point underdogs on the road against the Denver Broncos during the 2017 season, and famously bested the 2007 Patriots in the Super Bowl as 12.5-point ‘dogs.

The public isn’t buying the G-Men in Week 6 though, as more than three-fourths of all betting slips (76%) and an even larger percentage of total cash (84%) wagered against the spread is on New England. The total on this one is a bit more polarizing, evidenced by 56% of tickets on the over, but 64% of money wagered for the under. Those bigger bets have caused shops to lower the line from 46.5 to 42.5 over the last few days. One factor in these trends is the sheer amount of injuries the Giants are dealing with, as they’ll go into Thursday Night Football without star running back Saquon Barkley, his backup Wayne Gallman, tight end Evan Engram and wideout Sterling Shepard. That’s a lot of offensive firepower to be missing, especially for a showdown with a defense that is breaking records for its prowess during the first third of the campaign.

• The Giants are 3-3 straight-up and 5-1 against the spread over their last six meetings with the Patriots dating back to 2003.
• All five matchups between these teams since 2007 has been decided by four or less points.
• The Patriots are 5-0 straight-up during the 2019 NFL season, but just 3-2 ATS. The Giants are 2-3 SU and ATS in that same span.
• The total has gone UNDER in three of the last four meetings between New England and New York. The Thursday Night Football total of 42.5 is the lowest for a game involving these teams since 2003.

New England head coach Bill Belichick heaped praise on the Giants organization leading up to this Week 6 contest (via ESPN.com):

So that's a storied franchise and it goes way, way back. New York head coach Pat Shurmur discussed the difficulties of preparing for a game on a short week of rest, as well as the unique challenges the New England defense will present on Thursday Night Football (via Giants.com):

It speaks to the obvious. You only have four days instead of seven, so everything you do is compressed. There’s always a balance trying to get them physically and mentally prepared with the time allotted. Every NFL team has a four-day turnaround once a year, and this just happens to be our week…I think [New England has] the hallmarks of an outstanding defense. They’re sturdy against the run. They have effective pressure packages. They’re willing to pressure you in different ways, whether they leave one safety in the middle or no safeties, which means they have an extra rusher. Then they’re good at rushing with just four and covering in zone. They have the hallmarks of what makes for a great defense.

Jordan Raanan sees similarities between tonight’s game and Big Blue’s upset over the Broncos in the Mile High two years ago:

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said he’s been keeping an eye on Daniel Jones as the Giants signal-caller makes the first starts of his career (via Patriots.com):

I mean, I love football. I love football, I love watching quarterbacks play. I've seen a lot over 20 years. I've seen the position – I wouldn't say it's changed much. I think what you try to do as quarterback is get the team down the field, and everyone's got different skillsets in order to be able to accomplish that. Some teams build their offense around the skillsets of the quarterbacks; some don't. Some guys have systems that are conducive to their style; some don't. But, yeah, I appreciate good quarterback play. So, yeah, I pay attention to all the young guys, I pay attention to the old guys, I pay attention to every quarterback in the league and watch them, watch how they lead, watch how they play, throw, their fundamentals, their decisions. I've got to know what my competition's like, so I'm trying to study those guys, too.
