Mexico earthquake: Is there a tsunami warning? 7.7 quake hits La Crucecita

MEXICO has been rocked by a huge earthquake which has killed at least one person, prompting tsunami warnings to the Central American country.

Mexico: Ground moves during 7.7 magnitude earthquake

A massive 7.7 has rocked the coastal town of La Crucecita, Oaxaca, with experts fearing a tsunami as a result. A warning from the NOAA's Tsunami Warning System issued warnings all along the southern Americas, with Guatemala, Mexico, Hondorus and El Salvador all at risk. The warning stated: "BASED ON THE PRELIMINARY EARTHQUAKE PARAMETERS... HAZARDOUS TSUNAMI WAVES ARE POSSIBLE FOR COASTS LOCATED WITHIN 1000 KM OF THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. "

Seismic alarms were triggered when the area began rocking, with many people still at home in the morning.

At least one person has died from the aftermath of the quake, in a region which is home to upwards of 60 million inhabitants.

A flyover from Mexico City's public security ministry revealed there were no fallen buildings.

Claudia Sheinbaum, the city’s mayor, tweeted: “So far no major incidents [reported].”

However, power outtages have recorded across the region, making it dificult for officials to communicate.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said: “So far no damage has been reported to us. We don’t have communications with Oaxaca.”

The massive tremor began shaking the town of La Crucecita, on the west coast of Mexico, at 09.29AM local time (4.29PM BST), with the USGS stating the quake occurred 71 kilometres beneath the surface.

Several videos during the earthquake show the ground moving violently as telephone masts sway violently.

One person posted on Twitter: "We just had a 7.1 earthquake in Mexico City, apparently without consequences, but still scary, as always."

Another reported to Volcano Discovery: "Heard the alarm, went outside with my pregnant wife. didn't feel anything but looked down and saw a puddle from last night's rain trembling.

Mexico: Earthquake ‘causing buildings to sway' says expert

"Thirty seconds later the ground was shaking side to side, for about 30 seconds, then it calmed down."

A third said: "Long wave type shaking, door and frames moved some books fell down from shelves. My apartment is located on the 4th floor."

Mexico is prone to earthquakes as it sits upon the much feared Ring of Fire.

The Ring of Fire is the largest and most active fault line in the world, stretching from New Zealand, around the east coast of Asia, over to Canada and the USA and all the way down to the southern tip of South America and causes more than 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes.

The plates which make up the Ring of Fire are so huge even the slightest shift results in massive tremors, volcano activity and tsunamis.

In total, 452 volcanoes sit upon the Ring of Fire and seismologists state it is impossible to predict when a volcano will erupt.

Mexico in particular is always on high alert following a pair of devastating earthquakes which hit Mexico in September, 2017.

More than 300 people were killed in a powerful earthquake in Mexico on 19 September, 2017, and a week prior to that when the nation was hit by an 8.1 mega quake.

In 2018, Oaxaca was hit by an earthquake, claiming the lives of 14 people.
