A college student felt the extent of how cruel Twitter trolls can be when she shared her boyfriend's sweet gesture towards her best friend.

Indiana-based Abigail Gibson, 21, said her boyfriend Max Kupfer, 21, had bought flowers for her best friend after Steph's boyfriend cheated on her. She explained: 'My boyfriend bought her flowers just to show her that she deserves better than a cheater. He knows if he's dating me, he's dating my friends.'

However it wasn't long before Abigail's tweet went viral and attracted over 1,000 responses, many of them sewing the seed of doubt that there was something going on between Max and Steph.

'I didn't think it would come off creepy or overstepping, especially since they're close friends,' Abigail explained to the outlet.

'I wanted to cheer her up and do something nice for her and show her not all guys are so sh**ty,' Max told BuzzFeed News.

Stephanie was so surprised by the gesture that it reportedly 'almost made her cry'.

Stephanie said she was so 'surprised' by the gesture that 'it almost made [her] cry.'

'It made my day better knowing I had people around me who cared for, and supported, me so much,' she said. 'I really appreciated the gesture.'

Online, however, the gesture didn't go down so well with everyone.

'Let my mans buy my friend flowers they both getting shot,' one woman wrote.

'He f**king your bestie,' said another female user.

However, others saw the genuine heartfelt gesture as a sweet act.

'I have no issue about this,' one woman said. 'If I had a boyfriend and they did this for my friend I'd find it thoughtful and kind. Those who think "Oh he must want her", "He is cheating on her" need to heal. Allow people to be kind.'

Another agreed: 'If your friendships are healthy and your relationship is healthy you would understand the pure love in this.'

'I love that he did this for your friend. It shows the kind loving soul that he has. When someone's hurting so many people don't notice/care. I have a lifelong friend & thru the years I've always said her & I are a package deal. So I get this,' said another female user.

'Who said chivalry was dead,' a dad-of-two added.

Support: Others weighed in to agree with Abigail that it was a genuine gesture, dissing the naysayers as insecure

Abigail added that she thinks her now-viral tweet was 'misinterpreted'.

She clarified: 'I meant it more as a metaphor... my friends are his friends.'

'Max has a heart of gold and he cares about the people I keep close to me,,' she added, 'which is everything I could ask for in a boyfriend.'
