Vermont State Police: Woman revs up her Subaru, crashes into health center, then flees on foot

BRADFORD, Vt. — A 40-year-old woman revved up her car, stepped on the gas, then crashed into a local health care facility late Saturday night, according to

Vermont State Police

, who found her after she fled the crash scene on foot.

Dawnette Greene of Vershire, Vermont, was charged with OUI, negligent operation, providing false information to police, and leaving the scene of a crash that caused property damage and injured her passenger.

Greene's license is suspended and she wasn't supposed to be driving, police said. As of Saturday night, she was being held at the Northeast Regional Correctional Center in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

Police responded to a 9:54 p.m. report of a one-car crash in the town of Bradford, where they found a 1991 Subaru Legacy lodged in the front porch of the Little Rivers Health Care Center at 437 S. Main St.

Greene's passenger, 52-year-old Mark Covey, was standing outside the vehicle with injuries, but Greene had fled the scene before the arrival of troopers, who found her nearby a short while later.

Witnesses told police that Greene had been driving on South Main Street when she stopped for an unknown reason at the intersection of Maple Street, then began revving the engine of her Subaru.

She proceeded to accelerate at a high rate of speed, losing control of the vehicle and running off the roadway, police said. She drove onto a lawn, nearly striking a pedestrian, back across South Main Street, where she crashed into the health center, police said.

Covey, also of Vershire, was taken to a local hospital with head and facial injuries, police said. He's facing a disorderly conduct charge for "repeatedly screaming numerous profanities at Troopers in front of a crowd that had gathered," State Police said in a news release.

The Subaru sustained heavy front-end damage, while the medical facility sustained "moderate structural damage to a large front porch," police said.
