Austin PD Poised To Respond To Disturbances At Voting Sites

AUSTIN, TX — The Austin Police Department is poised to respond to disturbances or unrest leading up to election day, with officers on "tactical alert" ready to respond to unlawful activity at the areas's polling places, officials said.

In a recent news conference, Assistant Police Chief Joe Chacon outlined the various ways the area's polling places are being safeguarded to ensure a smooth election. Chacon noted that while officers will not be stationed at or monitoring the various sites, they are ready to respond quickly should any disturbances — voter intimidation, loitering, protests and the like — occur.

"They have the ability to go by, patrol or take a look that everything looks good," Chacon said. "However, they are not there to take any other action besides that and just to make sure that the peace is being maintained."

The task of ensuring that rules are being followed at every polling place is left to election judges and poll watchers, the assistant chief said. The latter, Chacon added, are tasked with ensuring there is no intimidation or undue influence exerted over voters.

"Those judges certainly understand the election law, and when it would be appropriate to call law enforcement," Chacon said. He described as typical disturbance as someone who has been asked to leave the site but refuses. "But apart from that, APD really does not have an active role in the site security, necessarily, other than to maintain the peace."

Given the heightened divisiveness of this year's presidential election, Chacon acknowledged many residents fear potential unrest at the polls. To date, police have no intelligence as to any planned activity by disruptors, he said. However, he assured, officers are ready to respond should such incidents emerge.

"We anticipate very big crowds," he said, referencing election day on Nov. 3. "I can tell you we have no specific information here at the Austin Police Department of anything that is set to happen at any of our polling locations or on specific dates. But I can certainly tell you the Austin Police Department will be prepared should anything like that pop up."

He said every officer will be on so-called "tactical alert" while in full uniform, armed with their equipment to be "...wherever necessary if protests or unrest were to become unlawful. He said the police department is "adequately staffed" to respond to potential disturbances across the region.

"We certainly respect peoples right to peacefully assemble and voice their opinions," Chacon said. "They just have to do it within the law. We're just here to balance that right with public safety."

Record-breaking crowds marked the first week of early voting that began last Tuesday as voters still not casting ballots descend on polling places through Oct. 30 for the early voting period. Election day is Nov. 3.
