LINDEN – Former state Sen. Joseph Suliga was honored with the recent naming of "Senator Joseph Suliga Way" in the Tremley Point section of the city's 7th Ward.

Suliga, the city's longtime chief financial officer, died in 2005 following a car crash. He was 47.

A ceremony at the bridge to the Linden Logistics Center was held on June 4 where Linden Mayor Derek Armstead and Senate President Nicholas Scutari participated. Scutari was serving as acting governor that day because both Gov. Phil Murphy and Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver were out of state.

“Joe Suliga was a model of public service at all levels of our government, and the City of Linden and the State of New Jersey stand as better places to live, work and raise families today because of that service,” Armstead said. “This street-naming will make sure Joe’s tireless work for his constituents and service to his city and state are not forgotten.”

Suliga also served as a Linden councilmember, member of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders and in the Assembly. He began his political career at age 19 while a student at Kean University, when he was elected to serve on the Linden Board of Education. He represented the 22nd Legislative District in the state Senate until 2004.

“I am proud to recognize and honor one of Linden’s best, the honorable Senator Joe Suliga,” Scutari said. “I considered Joe a friend and a mentor. He was a dedicated public servant who was instrumental in improving the lives of others. He set an admirable example of selfless service that will be long remembered.”

The Feb. 18, 2005 crash occurred after Suliga got into a 2003 Infiniti driven by Nicholas J. Sorrentino, 40, of Cranford, in front of a Linden bar. The Infiniti was struck by a westbound 1995 Chrysler Sebring driven by Omar S. Beeks, 35, of Elizabeth, which had crossed a double yellow line into the eastbound lane. Suliga was pronounced dead at the scene.
