Monahan’s Seafood looking for community support to survive coronavirus pandemic

(UPDATED 3 p.m. March 26.)

ANN ARBOR, MI – Monahan’s Seafood has been an Ann Arbor staple for 40 years and, with the support of countless community members, it hopes to continue doing so long after the end of the cornavirus pandemic.

Many local businesses are struggling, and some are even closing, amid the COVID-19 outbreak, which led to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ordering residents to stay home and non-essential businesses to shut down until April 13. Monahan’s Seafood owner Mike Monahan has taken to the internet to ask the Ann Arbor community to help the business stay afloat.

“It’s not part of our self-sufficient fishmonger pride to ask anything from our customers who already do so much in supporting us. However, these are times like we’ve never experienced in our lives and hopefully never will again,” Monahan wrote in a GoFundMe page he created for the business at 407 N. Fifth Avenue in Kerrytown.

As of 10 a.m., Thursday, March 26, more than $29,000 has been raised to help support the family-owned business and its employees still at work providing seafood to the Ann Arbor community.

Supporters have been coming from every direction since the page went live, Wednesday, with people donating anywhere from $10 to $500 to help the business reach it’s posted goal of $65,000.

“It’s just overwhelming the kind of support we’ve been seeing from people who don’t even live in the area anymore,” Monahan said. “We want to thank everyone for such amazing support.”

In addition to supporting the local establishment, Monahan’s promises anyone who donates $50 or more to the GoFundMe page will receive a Monahan’s T-shirt and a one-year membership card entitling the donor to a 10-percent discount on fresh fish and seafood, lunch, or any other products sold at Monahan’s.

Established in late 1979, Monahan’s recently celebrated 40 years in business and emphasizes catering to customer requests.

“Words can’t describe how thankful we are to have served the Ann Arbor community and beyond the past 40 years. We are doing everything we can within our power to continue doing so,” Monahan’s said on its GoFundMe page.

Monahan’s is still open and offering takeout and curbside pickup for both retail and lunch
