Who Treats Pulmonary Hypertension?

Rate This

Dr. Skloven recalls the specialists who can treat patients diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension. Dr. Skloven attended medical school at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and now treats patients at Banner Heart Hospital in Mesa, Arizona.

Dr. Skloven:
Who treats pulmonary hypertension, basically is a function of what does pulmonary hypertension affect in the body? It affects the lungs and the heart, so pulmonary specialists and heart specialists are the doctors primarily treating this disease.

The pulmonary physician manages the oxygen, the lung aspects of the disease. What pulmonary hypertension does to the heart is it causes failure, weakness, and eventually failure of the right heart and that becomes the job of the cardiologist primarily to manage that part of the disease.

So it’s a combined approach with close communication between these two specialties. These patients often see each one of these doctors on a very frequent basis.
