UPDATE: DeWitt officer hospitalized after crash identified

Robert Stump has been identified as the DeWitt police officer injured in a horrific head-on crash this past Wednesday, January 15.

Following the accident, Laingsburg Police Department Chief Dan DeKorte confirmed to News 10 that a DeWitt Township officer was hospitalized, along with a 33-year-old woman.

At that time, both the officer and the driver sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Saturday, a GoFundMe page was set up in the officer's name to try and raise $20,000.

On the day of the accident, Chief DeKorte was in pursuit of a woman who was driving a 2005 Dodge Caravan in Laingsburg at about 11:03 a.m.

He said the chase lasted 11 minutes and started after the woman was stopped for an outstanding warrant.

The warrant had been issued in 54B District Court in East Lansing for dangerous drugs.

Chief DeKorte said he recognized the woman and saw her driving around downtown Laingsburg.

He said he had a previous public safety matter with her back in December.

Chief DeKorte said the woman drove through Laingsburg, headed west to Round Lake Road, then to Chadwick, onto to northbound Williams and then to westbound Jason before the accident happened.

While in the area of West Jason Road, he said DeWitt Township Police had an idea that she was coming and put out two spike strips.

Chief DeKorte said the woman hit the spike strips but continued driving westbound on Jason for about a half-mile.

As she approached Old U.S. 27, Chief DeKorte said officers turned on eastbound Jason Road and tried to stop her.

Chief DeKorte said she crossed the center line and drove straight into a DeWitt Township officer's vehicle.

The crash happened right at the intersection of West Jason Road and Old U.S. 27.

He said she appeared to intentionally hit the vehicle.

He said she had to be cut out of the minivan by emergency crews.

Chief DeKorte said the officer had to be pulled out of the vehicle because crews had to spray it with a fire extinguisher.

Chief DeKorte said the woman told police after she hit the vehicle that she wanted to kill herself.

The Clinton County Sheriff's office has taken over the case and is recommending that prosecutors look at an attempted murder charges for the woman who caused the crash.
