Sign up for ballroom dance classes

Ballroom dance classes are returning to the Anderson Arts Center this fall with COVID-19 precautions in place. Beginner and intermediate classes will be taught in the Kemper Center's Simmons Gymnasium in four-week sessions in September and October.

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 15, couples can join the Introduction to Ballroom Dance class from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, or join the Technique Enhancement class from 7-8 p.m. Thursdays starting Sept. 17.

To ensure local and state safety regulations are being followed, instructors and students will be required to wear masks through the duration of the classes. Capacity will be limited so that couples can socially distance while they dance together.

Former Broadway dancer Geri Dougherty returns as dance instructor for students no matter their experience or age.

Dougherty has been teaching Ballroom Dance at Kemper Center for seven years, and was previously a dance instructor at Arthur Murray for 12 years. In her youth, she took first place in the All American Dance competition in Madison, Wisconsin.

The classes cover basic steps such as the waltz, fox trot, tango, salsa, cha-cha, rumba and other classic styles.

The next four-week beginner sessions begin n Sept. 15 or Oct. 13, and the next four-week Technique Enhancement sessions begin Sept. 17 or Oct. 15. Lessons are $75 per couple for all four weeks.
