'We've landed': James Van Der Beek reflects on a tough year and 'drastic changes' from Texas

James Van Der Beek hasn't had an easy year.

The "Dawson's Creek" alum, 43, took to Instagram on Tuesday to reflect on the challenges he and his family have faced over the last 10 months, including his wife Kimberly's two miscarriages, his shocking "Dancing with the Stars" elimination and his mother's death.

"And... we’ve landed," the actor wrote, captioning several photos tagged in Texas. In the images, Van Der Beek and his family appear to hike by an idyllic river. He and Kimberly, who married in 2010, share five kids: Olivia, 10, Joshua, 8, Annabel, 6, Emilia, 4, and Gwendolyn, 2.

"In the last ten months, we’ve had two late-term pregnancy losses, each of which put @vanderkimberly in the hospital, we spent Christmas break thinking she had a tumor (the doctor was wrong, thank god), a business colleague I hired hijacked the project and stabbed me in the back, I was prematurely booted off a reality dancing show I was favored to win in front of the whole world, and my mom died," he wrote. "And a shut-down."

Despite all these hardships, Van Der Beek added he remains grateful. "All of that led to some drastic changes in our lives, and dreams, and priorities... and landed us here," he wrote. "Overflowing with profound gratitude today."

This isn't the first time Van Der Beek has referenced his family's move to a new state. On Monday, the actor wrote on Instagram that he's feeling freer while "in the midst of a move to a new state 1500 miles from any place I’ve ever lived." On Sept. 30, he wrote that he was leaving Los Angeles, and he's been documenting his family's roadtrip through the Southwestern United States throughout October.

Seven months after Van Der Beek shared on "DWTS" that his wife suffered a miscarriage, the couple announced in June they lost an unborn child again.

"This time, we kept the news to ourselves. But last weekend, once again, 17 weeks in... the soul we’d been excited to welcome into the world had lessons for our family that did not include joining us in a living physical body," the actor wrote on Instagram.

Kimberly was rushed in an ambulance to the hospital for "another harrowing night of blood transfusions," he said at the time, thanking the medical professionals who "navigated the maze of regulations to save her life."

Van Der Beek was a front-runner to win "DWTS" last season but was shockingly eliminated in the semifinals during the same episode in which he tearfully announced that his wife had suffered a miscarriage.

Van Der Beek did not name the colleague or project referenced in his post. This year he has appeared in projects including Quibi's "Princess Bride" take, "Bad Hair," an upcoming horror-comedy film on Hulu and the game shows "25 Words or Less" and "Match Game."
