Santa Clara County Reports 17 New COVID-19 Cases, 1 Death

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — The Santa Clara County Public Health Department reported 17 additional cases of the new coronavirus Tuesday.

The report brings the countywide total of COVID-19 cases to 2,819.

The county reported one additional coronavirus-related fatality, bringing its death toll to 143.

There are currently 38 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Santa Clara County, of which 11 are being treated in intensive care units.

Elsewhere around the Bay Area and beyond, Alameda County officials on Tuesday announced the launch of a new free COVID-19 coronavirus testing site opening in West Oakland this week.

The center will open at Wednesday and operate for four weeks on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A few days after Sonoma County Sheriff Mark Essick confirmed he would not enforce the county health officer's stay-at-home order regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, it appears as if he and other county leaders are trying to get on the same page.

In a joint statement issued Monday, Essick and Sonoma County Board of Supervisors President Susan Gorin announced that the county will begin looking at ways to loosen some restrictions.

New parts of Santa Clara County's economy and civic life will be allowed to reopen Friday after weeks of being shuttered by the novel coronavirus pandemic and the efforts to slow its spread.

The county's health officer announced Monday that in-store retail, outdoor dining, childcare, summer camps and manufacturing will be allowed to resume, as will religious, cultural and civic activities.

There have been 112,979 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 4,184 coronavirus-related deaths in California as of Tuesday afternoon according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The United States had 1,830,066 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 106,120 coronavirus-related fatalities as of Tuesday afternoon.
