CAIRO — Cairo’s season-opener again Brooks County has been canceled after a COVID-19 outbreak on the Cairo football team.

According to Grady County School superintendent Dr. Kermit Gilliard, two coaches have tested positive as have four players. A third coach was going to be tested on Thursday.

Gilliard, Cairo principal Chris Lokey, athletic director Tom Fallaw and head coach Steve DeVoursney are scheduled to meet on Monday to determine if next week’s game against Thomasville can be played.

This is the third straight week the Syrupmakers have not been able to play due to COVID-19.

A preseason scrimmage against Mitchell County was canceled after COVID-19 issues in the Mitchell County program.

Then the season-opener at Fitzgerald last week was postponed after issues in the Fitzgerald program. That game was postponed until Sept. 17.

The other off date for Cairo is Oct. 15. Brooks County plays a Region 1-1A public school region game against Charlton County on that date.

Season-ticket holders can save the ticket and present it next year for a $10 credit. General-admission ticket holders can use the ticket at the next home game, which is scheduled to be Sept. 10 against Escambia (Fla.)
