A Complete Timeline of Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman's Relationship

Red carpet regulars and beacons of true romance Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have been filling our feeds with PDA, unforgettable awards show moments and constant reminders that true love really does win. Though the two have been together for over a decade, it hasn't always been the stuff of fairy tales and country hits. Here's everything you need to know, from the moment they met and those two adorable kids to that quarantine ankle injury that caught all the headlines while everyone was stuck inside.

2005

The two officially meet at the 2005 G'Day USA gala — the organization is "Australia’s premier public and economic diplomacy program in the United States," according to its official website — but they both have different memories of how the night went.

"I remember thinking, I had such a crush on him, and he wasn't interested in me," Kidman told Ellen DeGeneres back in 2017. "It's true! He didn't call me for four months."

According to Urban, he wasn't sure enough in himself to contact her. He said that he'd had her number, but never managed to call her.

"Somebody had given me her number and I had it in my pocket for a while. I kept looking at it thinking, 'If I call this number, she's going to answer. I don't know what [to] say'," the singer said during a 2018 appearance on Interview, an Australian talk show.

"I wasn't in a very healthy place in my life. I'd never have thought she'd see anything in a guy like me," he added. "But at some point, I plucked up the courage to call those numbers and she answered, and we started talking and we talked and talked and talked and talked and it was effortless."

2006

After they started dating, Kidman knew that she wanted to marry Urban after a few months. She told People that on the morning of her 38th birthday when Urban surprised her with a trip to Woodstock, New York, she knew he was The One.

"I believed by that point he was the love of my life," Kidman said. "Maybe that's because I am deeply romantic, or I'm an actress, or I have strong faith as well, but I just believed, 'Oh, OK, here he is.'"

June 2006

The couple got married on June 25, 2006, in Manly, Australia, just north of Sydney. Hugh Jackman and Crowded House singer Neil Finn performed at the ceremony, and, of course, so did Urban. Russell Crowe, Baz Luhrmann, and Naomi Watts were on the guest list.

October 2006

According to O Magazine, Urban had already completed two stays in rehab before Kidman staged an intervention for him in 2006. After they were married, he sought treatment again and spent three months at an in-patient facility.

"I caused the implosion of my fresh marriage," Urban told Rolling Stone in 2016. "It survived, but it's a miracle it did. I was spiritually awoken with her. I use the expression 'I was born into her,' and that's how I feel. And for the first time in my life, I could shake off the shackles of addiction."

In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2007, Kidman said that they'd met each other at the perfect time: "I would probably say that two very lonely people managed to meet at a time when they could open themselves to each other. We were a mixture of frightened and brave."

July 2008

On July 7, 2008, the couple's first child, Sunday Rose Kidman Urban, was born in Nashville, Tennessee. Kidman had adopted two children, Isabella and Conner, with her ex-husband, Tom Cruise. According to People, the name is a combination of Urban's grandmother, Rose, and Australian art patron Sunday Reed.

Kidman and Urban welcome their second child via surrogate on December 29.

"Our family is truly blessed, and just so thankful, to have been given the gift of baby Faith Margaret," the couple said in a 2011 statement. Kidman, who had two miscarriages during her relationship with Cruise, later told Vogue that she wishes she could have had even more children with Urban.

"I wish I could have met [Keith] much earlier and had way more children with him, but I didn't," she said in the 2015 interview. "I mean, if I could have had two more children with him, that would have been just glorious."

2014

Kidman's father passes away and Kidman told Ellen Degeneres that Urban helped her through the loss.

"He has been so good to me for nine years, but for the last sort of month — which has been a really tough time for me — when you have your partner who just literally carries you through a tough time, he's been amazing to me," she said. "To have my husband to step up in that way it makes me cry. He's amazing. I will keep him. I'll do anything for that man."

Kidman later told InStyle that every time Urban has to leave on tour or they have to be separated for work, he always writes her a letter. "For every single night he's away, he leaves me a love letter. Every single night of our relationship," she said.

Kidman tells Harper’s Bazaar that the secret to a happy marriage is making time for one another.

"Obviously, I work hard, but when I'm off, I'm off," she said. "Keith and I are very good at immediately clicking off because we have a really good life in Nashville that's very simple, quiet, and nourishing because we've made it like that."

Sunday and Faith both make an appearance in season 2 of Big Little Lies.

"They were in as extras in Big Little Lies, which I've never told anyone. There I am now being a big mouth," she told DeGeneres in October 2018.

Urban let fans in on a secret. During an interview with iNews, he said that the lyrics in his 2018 song "Gemini" are actually about his wife. "The song is actually about Nicole — and she loves it," he said. "It's a fun song. My co-writer Julia Michaels asked me to describe Nicole and that’s what came out."

Kidman explained that Urban was a huge cheerleader during the filming of Big Little Lies season 2, saying that he helped her through all the dark material.

"I have the most extraordinary partner in life. I will always say that about him," she told Entertainment Tonight. "I'm one of the very fortunate women in the world to have had a wonderful father, and I have a wonderful husband, and I'm just very — I love to be able to say that because to talk about the good men that have influenced me and affected me."

Kidman broke her ankle during the coronavirus pandemic.

"About five weeks ago, she was running around the neighborhood, as she does, and just didn't see a pothole and rolled her ankle and got a small break in her ankle," Urban said during an interview with The Project. "And so she's been relegated to the boot for the last handful of weeks."
