FOOTBALL

COACH NEWS EXPECTED: An announcement on the new head football coach at Capital High School is expected at any time, said Santa Fe Public Schools incoming superintendent Larry Chavez. Four of the seven applicants seeking to replace Bill Moon as coach have some association to the school: Zeke Villegas and Joe Ray Anaya are Capital alums, while Villegas and Joaquin Garcia were current assistant coaches and Matthew Rael was an assistant with the program for three years. The three other applicants include LeCarrius Cage, Valencia defensive coordinator; Jeffrey Scharum, head coach and athletic director at Newcomb; and Tarick Embrack, Gallup offensive coordinator.

BASKETBALL

ON THE COMMITTEE: Northern New Mexico College men's coach Ryan Cordova will be the Continental Athletic Conference representative on the NAIA's National Administrative Council and Championships Competition Committee.

SIGNED: D.J. Byron, who averaged 27 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.2 steals for West Las Vegas, has signed to play basketball for his hometown New Mexico Highlands University. Cleveland's Alexa Madueno, who helped the Storm go 10-3, signed to play basketball with the Cowgirls.

Class 1A-4A girls singles: No. 1 Isabel Volnescu of Santa Fe Prep advanced to Saturday's late state championship finals, beating Santa Teresa's Luisa Andazola 6-0, 6-1 and Mikeala Sena of Robertson 6-3, 6-2. That earned her a championship match against No. 3 Kate McDonald of Los Alamos, who beat Shaelyce Hann of Highland 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 and Ava Badger of Albuquerque Academy 7-6 (4) 6-4.

Girls doubles: Top-seeded Mariela Rigales and Hannah Garcia of St. Michael's reached the championship match by beating Kimberly Villasenor and Perla Gonzalez of Lovington 6-2, 6-1, and Laura Blaeser Taryn Wood of Portales 6-0, 6-1, respectively. Rigales and Garcia met No. 2 Riley Cordova and Isabella Jaramillo of Belen.

Boys 1A-4A doubles: No. 2 Evan Bloodworth and Wade McDermott of St. Michael's reached the championship match against top-seeded Tanner and Connor Dils of Albuquerque Academy after beating Kerwin Barragan and Luis Dorado of Santa Teresa 6-0, 6-1, and Si Teel and David Corrales of Lovington 6-0, 6-1.

Boys singles: No. 1 Owen Dooley of Los Alamos advanced to the championship match against the Chargers Joseph Braun by beating Kameron Dunmar of St. Michael's 6-3, 6-3.

BASEBALL / Wednesday

RIO RANCHO 21, CAPITAL 0: The host Jaguars (10-5, 5-3 District 5-5A) gave nine first-inning runs against the robust Rams.

ESPAÑOLA VALLEY 5, TAOS 4: Markus Salazar drove in two runs, and Jeremy Martinez, Jordan Bell and Jaydon Griego each had two hits to lead the visiting Sundevils (8-9, 5-4 District 2-4A) past the Tigers (2-14, 1-7).

MORIARTY 14, POJOAQUE VALLEY 5: Tobias Velasquez went 2-4 with two RBI, but the visiting Elks (7-7, 5-4 District 2-4A) could not muster enough offense against the Pintos.

Thursday

MCCURDY 13, QUESTA 6, MCCURDY 13, QUESTA 2: Thomas Bolton had three RBI, and Lucas Martinez scored three runs and drove in two as the visiting Bobcats' (10-0, 8-0 District 5-2A) strong season continues with a doubleheader sweep over the Wildcats (2-9, 1-7), who got runs from Matt Rael and Issac Ortega in the night cap. In the opener, Markus Martinez and Santiago Samora each had four RBI for McCurdy.

PECOS 20, CLAYTON 10; PECOS 19, CLAYTON 9: The host Panthers (5-7, 2-4 District 6-2A) put up six in the fifth to put away the Yellowjackets (0-12, 0-7) in the second game of a doubleheader sweep. A nine-run first inning and an eight-run fourth powered Pecos in the opener.

WEST LAS VEGAS 7, ROBERTSON 3: The visiting Dons (5-12, 1-6 District 2-3A) pulled the big upset over the rival Cardinals (8-5, 5-2), who managed just six singles in the game.

PEÑASCO 12, MORA 2; PEÑASCO 21, MORA 8: Jerome Lopez and Zach Gonzales each scored three runs, leading the host Panthers (6-5, 4-2 District 5-2A) past the Rangers (2-7, 1-5), who got two RBI from Deleno Maestas in the opener. Gonzales added three runs in the opener.

SOFTBALL / Thursday

ESTANCIA 28, MORA 9: The host Rangerettes (4-6, 1-3 District 5-2A) had plenty of bats as Amaya Rose Romero had three RBI and two runs, but they just couldn't get the Bears out.

Wednesday

POJOAQUE VALLEY 18, MORIARTY 7: Jessica Roybal had three RBI and scored two runs, and Ayana Aguirre also drove home three as the visiting Elkettes (10-5, 8-1 District 2-4A) beat the Pintos.

TAOS 17, ESPAÑOLA VALLEY 7: Kenna Sandoval homered and drove home five runs, and Sydnie Pino had four RBI for the visiting Tigers (6-9, 5-3 District 2-4A), despite Jordan Torres having two RBI and a run for the Sundevils (10-7, 5-4).

Tuesday

ST. MICHAEL'S 10, MCCURDY 0; ST. MICHAEL'S 17, MCCURDY 2: The visiting Horsemen (9-8) scored 15 runs in the first two innings, taking care of business quickly against the Bobcats (4-7) to complete the doubleheader sweep. In the opener, St. Mike's put it away with five in the sixth.

Other Tuesday scores: Robertson 10, West Las Vegas 6.

UPCOMING THINGS TO SEE OR DO

VOLLEYBALL: Children entering grades 1-6 who want to work on their skills will have the opportunity to work with the Santa Fe High School coaching staff and players in a camp June 21-23, noon to 3 p.m. Campers will learn the fundamentals of the game, including passing, blocking, serving and hitting.
