Elliott Amon

Elliott (Al) Woodrow Amon, a Lab retiree formerly of Walnut Creek, died May 16, in Roseville, Calif. He was 87.

Born in Mercer, Pa., he graduated from high school in 1940. During his high school years, he worked as the janitor for the U.S. Post Office and handled special deliveries. He was employed in 1940-1941 as a drill press operator for the Reznor Mfg., Co. in Mercer, Pa.

He attended Grove City College, Grove City, Pa. for two years. In 1943, he was drafted to serve in the U. S. Army Infantry and was honorably discharged in 1946 as a first lieutenant. He served in the army of occupation of Germany and Austria. He re-entered Grove City College in 1946 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1948.

From 1948 to 1950, he was employed as a technical service representative for the Staley Mfg. Co. in Decatur, Ill. From 1951 to 1957, he was an FBI agent serving in Washington D.C., Scottsbluff, Neb. and Los Angeles.

He married Betty Fennell on Dec. 27, 1952 in Butler, Pa. They moved to Walnut Creek in 1957. He was employed in various administrative positions at Lawrence Livermore and Berkeley laboratories from 1957 to 1985 when he retired.

After retiring, he obtained his emergency teaching credential and was a part- time substitute teacher in the Mt. Diablo School District for two years.

He served on the draft board for several years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Concord, Calif. from 1961 to 2000 having served as a deacon and an elder.

He served as a member of the Concord Homes Board of Directors that oversaw the management of two retirement homes, the Heritage and the Plaza Tower.

He was a member of the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church since 2000.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; his son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Donna Amon of Visalia, Calif.; his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bradly Grondona of Granite Bay, Calif.; one grandson, David Amon; four granddaughters; Jena Grondona, Leah Grondona, Gianna Grondona and Chelsea Amon; and two brothers and seven sisters, Wilson of Mercer, Pa., Thomas of Cincinnati, Ohio, Patricia Amos of Mercer, Pa., Shirley Platt of Concord, Calif., Betty Cochran of Midlothian, Va., Nancy Filer of Mercer, Pa., Frances Buckley of New Carrollton, Md., Mary Galeana of Sacramento and Judy Anthony of Medina, Ohio.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Amon, who died in 1985; one brother and three sisters.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, June 19, at 2 p.m. at Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions may be made in Amon’s name to the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church Capital Campaign Program, 49 Knox Drive, Lafayette, Calif. 94549.
