It comes amid a November washout that has already seen major floods cut off communities and cripple infrastructure across the UK.

Mainly northern areas and the Midlands have bore the brunt of the miserable weather - as rivers burst their banks and bitter temperatures threaten heavy snow.

For today's weather forecast, the Met Office said: "Southwest England will see showery rain spreading in, this heavy in places.

"A few showers will affect east and northeast Scotland. Most other areas will be dry but also cloudy and cold.

"Northwest Britain should fare best for sunshine."

For tonight, plunging temperatures will bring widespread frost in areas of the northwest where skies remain clear.

The forecast added: "Many other areas will be cloudy, with showery rain in places, heavy in parts of the south and southwest."

It comes amid expectations that the UK could see its first prominent flurry of snowfall this week.

Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst said earlier: "Snow showers could be seen on higher ground of Scotland, with a bit of snow over northern England.

“It stays unsettled from next weekend onwards, with bands of rain through the following week.”

John Hammond, ex-BBC and Met Office forecaster of weathertrending, said: “There's a lot more rain to come, and that's worrying news for those hit by flooding.

“After a brief drier interlude, low pressure will take up residence.

"Flooding concerns continue.”
