PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - Pascagoula is encouraging people to hop on their bikes, get a little exercise, and explore the city on the historic Pascagoula Bike Trail.

"You really get out and leisurely see things and enjoy the ride," said bicyclist Jimmy Krebs.

Krebs is on an adventure in Pascagoula along the city's official historic bike trail. Pascagoula's culture, heritage, and historic places like the Round Island Lighthouse and the gothic Longfellow House come into full view along the route.

The trail was set up with safety and heritage in mind.

"There is an area that is mapped out. There's a level of safety. You can see the historic sites people may not know about the community," Krebs said.

Thirteen points of interest dot the Pascagoula Bike Trail, including the historic downtown depot, one of three spots where folks can rent bikes through a city vendor. It's all about encouraging physical activity for tourists and local people alike and putting the Flagship City's prime attractions under the spotlight.

"We love that fact that we can integrate modern society with these terrific historical locations. Pascagoula is very proud of its past. If we can show off these locations and encourage people to learn more and see the historical markers, it's fabulous," said Community Relations Director Lauri-Ellen Smith.

On the trail, you'll find the oldest standing building in the Mississippi Valley - the La Pointe-Krebs House, and museum. Plus, the Jimmy Buffet House where the music legend grew up in Pascagoula.

From the beach to all points around Pascagoula, the historic bike trail is a blend of history and exercise on a two-wheeled adventure.
