Paltrow's picture anger

by ALISON BOSHOFF, Daily Mail

She became a figure of fun after a tearful Oscar acceptance speech which was over-the-top even by Hollywood standards.

Now Gwyneth Paltrow claims she has embarrassed herself again.

The 29-year-old actress says she is mortified by the inclusion of her naked bottom in a shot for an American magazine.

The picture, by renowned French photographer Patrick Demarchelier, appears in the latest edition of Harper's Bazaar.

'I am really upset,' Miss Paltrow complained. 'The photographer lied to me and said he wasn't going to put my whole bottom in the picture.

'He told me, "If you take down your underwear we won't have that indentation, and I'm going to cut the photo right there".'

The star's modesty has taken both the magazine and photographer by surprise, as they believe they had her full and express permission throughout.

Some cynics even suggested yesterday that Miss Paltrow was simply enjoying the attention, focused as it is on her perfect derriere.

The star of the films Shakespeare In Love and Sliding Doors named Glenda Bailey, the new British editor of Harper's Bazaar, as the villain of the piece.

'It's her first issue and she's trying to create some kind of a sensation,' she claimed. 'I actually feel really offended by that.

'I am a very open person and I love to have fun and have a good time. But I generally keep that side of myself in private.

'I was surprised about the pictures because Patrick Demarchelier lied to me and said he wasn't going to put my bottom in the picture. He said he was going to crop it, like, just above.

'There's nothing I can do about it. It's my own fault. I listened to the French guy who told me I could trust him.'

Both Demarchelier and the magazine professed surprise at Miss Paltrow's outburst yesterday.

The photographer insisted: 'She wanted to pose nude.

'I didn't force her. I asked her to do some nudes and she said Yes.' A Harper's Bazaar spokesman added: 'Gwyneth saw the issue more than three weeks ago.

'We are really surprised that she is saying this because she didn't raise any objection to posing nude then and hasn't said anything to us about the pictures.'

She added: 'We don't put anything in the magazine that isn't tasteful or elegant. Gwyneth was very co-operative about posing for us.'

The episode echoes the controversy over a photograph of a knickerless Kyile Minogue which

appeared on the cover of the British magazine GQ 18 months ago in a parody of the classic 1970s Athena poster.

The former Australian soap star claimed her underwear was airbrushed out of the picture without her consent.

While admitting the image was tweaked to remove her knickers, GQ maintained this was done with Miss Minogue's full knowledge and permission.

Both sides, needless to say, benefited considerably from the ensuing publicity.
