The diving tank at a decades old public pool in Greenville is slated for demolition after suffering structural damage this winter.

The diving tank at the Greenville Community Pool will be removed and permanently filled in after significant damage occurred to the concrete decking and the plumbing and filtration systems.

Parks and Rec Director Gary Fenton says that pressure from the high water table surrounding the pool is to blame. He says trying to repair the 47-year-old facility wouldn't be cost effective because more problems are likely to occur as the pool continues to age.

Fenton says, "Whether or not we're able to band aid what we have for a while, and then ultimately, when will we build a new pool. That's the question, when will all that happen? But ultimately the day is going to come when we'll need to to replace the existing pool."

Fenton says the main pool was more widely used, and didn't suffer damage.

Opening day is still set for June 8th.
