Report: Retired NYPD police officer kills self in Orange County

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A retired New York Police Department officer committed suicide in Orange County on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.

Jose Pabon, 49, was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot in his Goshen home at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, the reports indicate.

Pabon is the 11th police officer to commit suicide this year, continuing the heartbreaking trend of active and retired NYPD officers taking their own lives in what Commissioner James O’Neill previously described as “a mental health crisis.”

Three of those officers were from Staten Island.

Edward Rosa, a retired transit cop, took his own life near the Eltingville Transit Center at the beginning of the month.

Sgt. Terrance McAvoy took his own life on July 18. Michael Caddy, 29, an officer in the 121st Precinct, took his own life on June 14.
