Old Man Memorial site to be turned over to NH in 2020
FRANCONIA, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire legacy fund will turn over the Old Man memorial site to the state in 2020 after completion.
The Old Man of the Mountain Legacy Fund has been working to create a memorial for the crumbled granite formation that resembled a human profile in Franconia Notch State Park.
There are two remaining projects before the site is turned over; a walkway to Profile Lake and a platform over the wetlands what connects to the Pemigewasset Trail, the Caledonian Record reported.
Before the massive granite profile crumbled in 2003, it attracted tourists to Franconia Notch for about 200. Since then, the legacy fund has created a memorial plaza, featuring seven steel "profilers" that re-create the Old Man's image.
"When the turnover to the state happens will depend on when we complete these two projects," said Dick Hamilton, founding member and former president of the Old Man of the Mountain Legacy Fund.
According to the Record, the projects costed $150,000 and were split by the state and the foundation.
