Brownies & Daytime Gardeners Plant Flowers by Historical Cemetery

Brownies and Daytime Gardeners Plant Daffodils beside Historical Cemetery

Last spring, Jennifer Morgan, leader of Brownie Troop #60421, took her young Girl Scouts for a walk around the center of North Haven to learn more about our town. As they passed the Historical Cemetery on Church Street, one of the young girls commented that the cemetery should be “made prettier with flowers”. Inspired by her little Brownie, Jennifer contacted the Daytime Gardeners to find out if this wish could be granted.

After getting approvals from the Cemetery Committee and Public Works Department, Daytime Gardeners Barbara Feinberg and Mary Ellen Proto helped the Brownie troop learn about naturalizing daffodils. A poster was used to teach the Brownies about the structure and growth of daffodils. Discussion on the types of daffodils helped the girls decide what they wanted to plant, and they learned that they needed to wait until cool fall weather to actually plant their bulbs.

October 14th was a crisp fall day and the Brownies gathered at the cemetery on the town green to plant daffodils. Walt Brockett assisted with the heavy digging, while Barbara, Mary Ellen, and Sally Brockett helped the girls with planting. Over 200 bulbs were planted along the front side of the hedge facing Church Street. Now the Brownies must patiently wait again while the bulbs are dormant through the winter. But we are certain the girls will be eagerly waiting for the warmer spring days that will bring the flowers into blossom. At that point, their wish to make the cemetery ”prettier with flowers” will be achieved.
