Frogs in the Pros: Trevon Moehrig gets the start for the Raiders

TCU safety Trevon Moehrig made his NFL debut for the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday, starting at free safety during the team’s Week 1 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. A second-round draft selection, Moehrig totaled five tackles, including three solo tackles, helping the Raiders to a late overtime victory to start the season with a 1-0 record.

Despite falling into the second round due to concerns about his back, Moehrig was the first of two TCU players drafted this year. The former Horned Frog standout started at free safety for the Raiders, often playing deep in coverage, and he’ll be a fixture of the Las Vegas defense under defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, who runs a lot of Cover 3 technique. Moehrig played 100 percent of the defensive snaps for the Raiders on Monday.

Jalen Reagor scores second career receiving touchdown

The former TCU wide receiver and 2020 first-round draft selection caught six passes from quarterback Jalen Hurts as the Philadelphia Eagles routed the Atlanta Falcons 32-6. Reagor totaled 49 receiving yards and scored on a 23-yard touchdown, his first of the season and the second of his career. Reagor utilized his speed to take a screen pass down the sideline for one of the easier touchdowns he’ll score in his NFL career.

Reagor’s rookie season was somewhat of a disappointment for Eagles fans, with the speedy wide receiver ending the season with only 396 yards on 31 receptions. Philadelphia opted to part ways with its veteran pass catchers, such as DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffery, before using another first-rounder this year on Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith. With Carson Wentz out and Hurts in full control of the Eagles offense, expect Reagor and Philadelphia’s young weapons to take a significant step forward this season.

Aviante Collins signs with the Dallas Cowboys

The TCU offensive tackle found a new home recently, signing with the Cowboys after being released from the Pittsburgh Steelers this past month. The former undrafted free agent spent four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings from 2017-20 before his brief tenure with the Steelers. Collins joins a Cowboys squad that recently lost starting right tackle La’el Collins for five games due to a league substance policy suspension.

Andy Dalton makes his Chicago Bears debut

The Red Rifle was under center to start the Sunday Night Football matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, finshing the evening 27-of-38 (71.1 percent) for 206 yards and a red-zone interception. Dalton was sacked three times behind an offensive line without second-round tackle Teven Jenkins as well as veteran Jason Peters and fifth-rounder Larry Borom, who each exited the game with injuries. Dalton had two rushes for 13 yards, losing one fumble.

It’s inevitable that first-rounder Justin Fields will become the starting quarterback sometime sooner than later, but Dalton will have another chance for his first win as a Bear when Chicago hosts Heisman winner Joe Burrow and the Cincinnatti Bengals this coming Sunday.
