AUGUSTA, MI — Four people have been transported to nearby hospitals following a head-on collision between a SUV and a pickup truck that was hauling a fifth-wheel trailer in eastern Kalamazoo County.

The accident, which occurred at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, has shut down a stretch of East G Avenue, on the 13000 block of East G Avenue between 39th Street and M-96, for an extended period of time this afternoon.

According to Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Jim VanDyken, at least three of the people involved have serious injuries. Five people, in total, were injured in the accident.

First-responders from the Ross-Augusta and Galesburg-Charleston fire departments arrived on scene at approximately 2 p.m. As of 4:20 p.m., the road was still shut down, according to VanDyken. It is unknown when it will re-open, but VanDyken said he expects it will be soon.

Speed appears to have been a factor in the crash, according to the sheriff’s office. VanDyken said it appears the at-fault driver crossed the center lane of the two-lane road.

The driver of the at-fault vehicle was transported to Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. Those in the other vehicle were transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, VanDyken said.

The crash remains under investigation.
