SAN MATEO – A 37-year-old San Mateo man was arrested Thursday in connection with a stabbing in downtown San Mateo, authorities said.

Officers were called to the Caltrain station parking lot at 385 1st Ave. about 10:10 p.m. for a report of stabbing in a culvert that runs underneath downtown, San Mateo police said in a news release. They arrived to find a man with a stab wound to his hand.

The culvert, known as Darcy’s Tunnel, is a hotspot for criminal activity, according to police, who have joined forces with the city’s public works department, local merchants and St. Vincent de Paul to address the issue, along with homelessness and loitering.

Police described the stabbing as an “isolated and targeted attack between two people who knew each other.”

With the help of a K9 unit, officers tracked down and arrested the suspect, identified as Hermelindo Agustin Lucas, as he walked to his home just blocks away, according to police. A knife was found during the arrest.

Lucas was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City on assault with a deadly weapon charges, as well as a bench warrant for alcohol-related disorderly conduct. He is being held on $25,500 bail.

The victim, meanwhile, was taken to a hospital and treated for his injuries.
