LAWTON – Cameron University will present its 32nd annual Beef Cattle Improvement Conference on Nov. 21.

Speakers will include Steven E. Myers, technical sales specialist, Purina Animal Nutrition. The conference will start with dinner at 6 p.m. in the McCasland Ballroom of the McMahon Centennial Complex. There is no charge to attend.

“The nutrition of a mama cow can have an effect on how that calf grows during pregnancy, but it can also make a difference once the calf is born,” Myers said. “Whether you are a cow-calf producer, stocker or feeder, you’ll want to understand how fetal programming has long-term effects on cattle.”

Myers will cite studies that demonstrate that gestational feeding programs have a direct impact on the health and development of unborn calves. His presentation will include information on how consistent fetal nutrition, including forage types, supplementation and an evaluation of stressors and how to address them, can impact subsequent generations of cattle in terms of conception rates, calving difficulty, weaning weights and marbling.

Myers has been involved in animal nutrition for more than 25 years. Before joining Purina Animal Nutrition in 2009, he served as beef consulting nutritionist for Land O’Lakes Purina Feed in the Mountain States and Pacific Northwest regions.

The 32nd annual Beef Cattle Improvement Conference is presented by the Cameron Department of Agriculture, Biology and Health Sciences.
