Celebrity jewelers David and Sybil Yurman showcase new flagship store

The Yurman family is making the most of its move from Madison Avenue to a new flagship jewelry outpost at 5 E. 57th St., opposite Tiffany.

At a breakfast preview Thursday, David and Sybil Yurman and their son, Evan, strolled the floors — as dozens of construction workers scrambled to complete the entrance and first floor for the evening opening.

Sybil, whose paintings grace the second floor, said after 52 years of marriage, her “secret” is that she and David never go to bed mad at each other.

Does David, 77, shower her with jewelry? “No, because we design everything together,” she explained, with the important exception of a sunburst line he dedicated to her. “I wish my parents could see this store,” she added, getting a bit teary. She turned 77 on Tuesday.

The light-colored space, with blonde wood, bases of pale granite and sheets of glass and mirrors, creates an airy atmosphere for the triplex, which includes cozy seating areas for bridal and private-client showings.

Evan, 37, who is a master at difficult meteorite and titanium designs, and those with semi-precious stones, said that having been on upper Madison Avenue, they’d looked “for years” for a new location closer to 57th Street. The new store also gives them the space to design one-of-a-kind items.

When he walked into this store with two mezzanine levels open to the ground floor, he said, “I knew it was the right place.”

The Yurmans are known for the twisted helix cable bracelet finished with gemstone ends that Evan’s parents designed in 1982, but what’s hot today, he said, are pieces that are “personal” to the customer, such as charms and pendants. “They look good with three, but you can have as many as you want,” he said.
