LOCAL ROUNDUP: Hazleton Area lacrosse team extends record win streak, clinches playoff berth

May 15—Riley Hudock scored eight goals, including the 100th of her career, as the Hazleton Area girls' lacrosse team routed host Lakeland 24-5 in a Wyoming Valley Conference game Saturday in Scott Twp.

The victory was a program-record seventh straight for the Lady Cougars, who upped their record to 8-8 and clinched a District 2/11 Class 3A playoff berth in the process.

Kaci Kilker, Lily Palfey, Taylor Kilker and Kyli Kilker each recorded a hat trick with three goals for the winners. Meg Drennan and Olivia Wills both added two goals.

Hazleton Area goalies Abby Bellas (six) and Lily Gross (two) combined for eight saves. Kyli Kilker had the most ground ball recoveries and Hudock and Mary Pecora caused the most turnovers. Hudock also had the most shots on goals and Taylor Kilker won the most draw controls.

Hazleton Area 11 Selinsgrove 10

Hazleton Area's streak continued Friday, as the visiting Lady Cougars outlasted Selinsgrove in sudden death overtime.

Hazleton Area pulled out to an 8-4 lead by intermission, but Selinsgrove clawed back to tie it at 10 and send it to overtime. There, Kyli Kilker scored the winning goal at 3:04 of the extra session to give the Lady Cougars the walkoff victory.

Riley Hudock scored four goals and Kilker added three for the winners. Taylor Kilker scored twice and Kaci Kilker and Meg Drennan pitched in with one goal apiece.

Lily Palfey had an assist, Taylor Kilker had the most draw wins, and Mary Pecora, Hudock and Kyli Kilker had the most ground balls for the Lady Cougars. Abby Bellas was in goal, recording 13 saves.

H.S. Tennis Locals bow out of District 2 tourney

All six local teams competing in the District 2 Doubles Tennis Championships were eliminated in the first day of competition Saturday.

In the Class AA event at Kirby Park, MMI's Noah Long and Thomas Maynerick won their first match over Mid Valley's Tejpal Kishore and Devin Lombardo 6-2, 6-3, before losing to Dunmore's David Day and Billy Portanova 6-0, 6-4.

The Preppers' Ryan McNelis-Peter Walko team lost to Tunkhannock's Zak Keiser-Aidan Edwards 6-1, 6-0 in the opening round.

In Class 3A at North Pocono, Crestwood's Alex Covelens and Julien Lacoste opened with a 6-1, 7-5 victory, but lost to Wilkes-Barre Area's Michael Hamel and Stanley Shimko 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. The Comets' Ryan Kostiuk-Brayden Fenwick team lost to Wallenpaupack's Jack Filip-Peter MacDonough 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round.

Hazleton Area's top team of Kittrick Danzeisen-Cameron Zynel started with a 6-3 first-set win over Wallenpaupack's Anthony Marie-Sam Filp, but lost the next two sets 6-0, 6-0. Meanwhile, the Cougars' Maxwell Hsiao-Jakob Narrow team fell to Delaware Valley's Jack Moniot-Griffen Kowal 6-1, 6-0.

The semifinals and finals will be held Monday at Kirby Park.

H.S. Softball Tri-Valley 12 Weatherly 1

Brittany Rice slugged a two-run home run and Gianna Poletti added a solo shot as Tri-Valley rolled past Weatherly in a five-inning Schuylkill League Division II-III make-up game between division champions Saturday at Hegins.

Tri-Valley will face Pine Grove and Weatherly will take on North Schuylkill on Monday in the Schuylkill League playoffs.

Poletti finished 2-for-2 with a double and homer, three runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases.

Hope Colahan went 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs for the Dawgs.

Libby McGrath got the start in the circle for Tri-Valley and tossed a one-hitter, striking out nine and walking four.

Maddie von Frisch had an RBI single for the Wreckers.

Pittston Area plated four runs in the bottom of the third to break a scoreless tie, and went on to the WVC Division 1 victory over the Lady Cougars.

Hazleton Area trailed 7-0 going into the sixth inning before coming to life, plating three runs. But the Patriots added a run in the home sixth, then blanked the Lady Cougars in the seventh to finish it.

Pittston Area pitcher Gianha Adams limited Hazleton Area to five hits and struck out seven.

Saige Weidlich tripled, singled and drove in a pair of runs to pace the Patriots' 10-hit attack.

Madison Forsythe tripled, singled and drove in two runs for the Lady Cougars (11-7, 7-6 WVC). Caitlyn Katchur went 2-for-2 with two singles and a walk, and Julia Mrochko had an RBI single to conclude the offense.

In Foster Twp., the Lady Preppers pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat Nanticoke for the first time in program history.

Grace Warner and Irene Altmiller paced the winners at the plate with a double and single apiece. Warner drove in a team-high three runs and Altmiller had two RBI. Alexis Dalesandro, Jackie Snyder and Kaylee Witner added two singles for MMI.

Witner, the winning pitcher, gave up 13 hits, but only three earned runs over nine innings. She struck out eight Trojans and walked four.

Caelan Quick and Ryliegh Sinko had three hits apiece as Nativity defeated Shenandoah Valley in a Schuylkill League Division II-III crossover game Friday.

Sinko finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Quick was 3-for-4 with one RBI. Also for the Green Wave, Mikaya Beadle had two singles and four RBIs.

Ang Donovan singled and drove in both runs for Shenandoah Valley.

Tri-Valley's senior recognition day Saturday provided a good glimpse of the future.

Freshman Caden Leonard pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out eight as the Dawgs blanked Weatherly in a six-inning Schuylkill League Division II-III crossover game.

Leonard only allowed a single to Antonio Colecio two batters into the game and dominated from there, needing 80 pitches in six innings. The Dawgs helped the left-hander by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning as Justin Parobek had a two-run single and Ralph Johnson plated another run with a single.

Chase Herb launched a two-run homer in the third inning and Tri-Valley capitalized on nine Weatherly errors. Herb and Jonas McGrath each scored three times.

Derek Pavlik, Cody Orsulak and Stephen Hood drove in a run apiece for the Panthers in Friday's Schuylkill League Division III victory over the Wreckers.

Louis Clouser led Panther Valley at the plate with two singles. Hood contributed a triple and Chase Weaver had a double.

Guisseppe Covelo led Weatherly with two singles.

Panther Valley, the Division III champion, will meet Blue Mountain in the league semifinals Tuesday evening at Pine Grove. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Comets' Ethan Shudak tripled his pleasure with wins in all three throwing events: shot put (41 feet-9 inches), discus (128-3) and javelin (136-8).

Teammate Adam Wood contributed firsts in both triple jump (40-0) and high jump (5-10).

Girls Berwick 76 Crestwood 74

Kayla Kresge swept both hurdles races for the Lady Comets in their narrow Wyoming Valley Conference loss to Berwick Saturday. She won the 100 meters in 16 seconds and took top honors in the 300 intermediates in 50.1.

Emma Sheloski added a win in the 200-meter dash in 29.0. She also ran legs on two winning relays. Molly DeMarzo was first in the 3200 (11:31) and Julia Lazo took the pole vault (10 feet.).

Freshman Baseball Hazleton Area 13 Valley West 3

Landon Yakubowski pitched a gem to earn the victory, and teammates Richie Rossi, Nick Ledger, Jordan Castrine and Darian Haraschak all singled twice to power the Hazleton Area offense.

Derek Antolick, Brady Mizenko, Gabe Yanuzzi and Marcos Gil Pena all had base hits for the Cougars.
