The Ridgeland High School football game against Holmes County Central has been canceled because of COVID-19, school officials said.
After three positive COVID-19 cases within the RHS football team, all members of the team will quarantine at home for 14 days, where they will have access to distance learning, school officials said.
The RHS boys basketball team has also been affected by quarantine. The team's practice and preseason play has been suspended and the players are on home quarantine, school officials said.
"At this time, 98.8% of the on-campus student population at Ridgeland High School is healthy and COVID-free," Gene Wright, director of communications for the Madison County School District said in a statement. "Across the entire MCS District, only 0.1% of the on-campus student and staff population have tested positive within the last week. For the entire school year, positive case totals represent only 0.5% of students and staff on campus."
Gov. Tate Reeves on Monday added Madison County to a list counties that are under additional COVID-19 restrictions that include a mask mandate.
Ridgeland's cancellation could have some postseason effects when it comes to seeding.
The Titans won't return to action until the start of the 5A division playoffs because they have a bye week next and the Holmes County Central game was their regular season finale.
Ridgeland will forfeit their game against the Jaguars. Because of that Ridgeland and Holmes County Central both have one conference loss in 5A Region 2.
If Holmes County defeats Vicksburg in their last 5A Region 2 game then they will be the one seed and Ridgeland will be a 3 seed. If Holmes County loses then Ridgeland will get the Region title and enter the playoffs as a one seed.
