Coronavirus: Plymouth Town Meeting Postponed To May 30

PLYMOUTH, MA — The annual Plymouth town meeting and special spring town meeting have been postponed a second time to May 30. The annual town meeting was originally scheduled for April 4.

Town Moderator Steve Triffletti announced the postponement in accordance with guidance from Gov. Charlie Baker and the state legislature.

"This action was taken after ongoing careful and considerable deliberation about the implications of the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus, present lack of containment, and risk to vulnerable populations inherent in public gatherings at this time," Plymouth Town Manager Melissa Arrighi said on the town's social media page. "The decision of Moderator Triffletti was made after consultation with othersand was based on upon orders an recommendations issued by the governor, among other things, restricting large gatherings and various public functions, the declaration of a state of emergency in the Commonwealth, and the recent order of the governor extending the closure of certain workplaces and prohibiting gatherings of more than 10 people."

More than half of the 122 Massachusetts residents who have died from the coronavirus succumbed in the past two days, as state health officials reported 33 new deaths for the second straight day Wednesday. For the first time, a person under 50 died due to complications related to COVID-19. The Suffolk County man, in his 30s, had preexisting conditions.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health also reported 1,118 new cases, bringing the total to 7,738. Even as testing expands — more than 51,000 have been administered, DPH said Wednesday afternoon — the true totals are thought to be significantly higher.
