Charlotte announced Thursday morning that its football game at No. 11 North Carolina, scheduled for Saturday, has been canceled.

The decision to cancel was made as a result of a depleted roster due to quarantine following Charlotte's COVID-19 contract tracing protocols.

Charlotte reported three positive cases of coronavirus among football players during the past two weeks. Fourteen-day quarantining of players who came into contact with those who tested positive has hit the 49ers' offensive line especially hard.

"We're extremely disappointed to have to cancel our game at North Carolina. While I know our team is heartbroken, due to the number of players in quarantine, we could not safely play," athletic director Mike Hill said in a news release. "We very much appreciate the University of North Carolina working with us to schedule this game."

Charlotte reported that as of Monday, 3,150 tests had been administered for student-athletes, coaches and staff since June 10 with a total of 20 positive cases. On Monday, 200 tests were administered with one positive.

Saturday's game would have been the first meeting between these football teams.
