Pennsylvania coronavirus update: New cases drop below 500 for first time since June 29

The Pennsylvania Health Department reported 479 new cases of the coronavirus Sunday.

It was the first day since June 29 that there were fewer than 500 new cases and the third day in a row that the number of new cases decreased.

To date, there have been 89,854 infections statewide since the start of the pandemic.

“Pennsylvania has been a model for the country on how to reopen effectively using a careful, measured approach,” Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said. “However, the virus has not gone away and we are seeing cases rise, especially in southwest Pennsylvania.”

Deaths

Overall: Four new deaths, compared with three the day before. That brings the total to 6,753.

Senior care: No new deaths in nursing or personal care facilities, compared with one the day before. That total stands at 4,592.

Hospitalizations

Around 2 p.m. Sunday, 592 people were hospitalized, compared with 589 the day before.

Testing

There were 9,852 tests taken, with 454 positive results, for a positive test rate of 4.6%, compared with 5.7% the day before. There have been 734,846 negative tests. Of those testing positive, the age breakdown is as follows:

Nearly 1% are 0-4.

1% are 5-12.

Nearly 3% are 13-18.

Nearly 8% are 19-24.

Nearly 37% are 25-49.

24% are 50-64.

Nearly 27% are ages 65 or older.

Lehigh Valley

Cases: 16 new cases (eight in Lehigh County, eight in Northampton County), the same number as the day before. That brings the total to 7,782 — 4,311 in Lehigh County and 3,471 in Northampton County. Over the last two weeks, cases in Lehigh and Northampton counties total 379, with a 14-day rate of 56 people per 100,000.
