PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (AP) — A former Tennessee bank worker has admitted to embezzling nearly $600,000, blaming the theft on low pay.

Citing court records, news outlets report Connie Sue Clabo has agreed to plead guilty to embezzlement and filing false tax records.

Per the plea agreement, the former Pigeon Forge SmartBank vice president of loan operations has admitted to stealing more than $350,000 from the bank between 2013 and 2018. It says she also admitted to manipulating bank records to clear her and her parents’ mortgage debt and then lied to an accountant to hide the theft.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Trey Hamilton says in the plea agreement that Clabo defended her actions when confronted by authorities, saying she wasn’t being sufficiently paid for all her hard work. Sentencing is set for April 2020.
