Florida reported 18,404 new COVID-19 cases from the weekend — 8,969 on Saturday and 9,435 on Sunday — and increased its death count by 71, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
The weekend reports continue the surge in new cases, likely driven by a rush to be tested ahead of the holidays and as the omicron variant spreads. The 7-day average for new cases is 7,068, the highest level since Sept. 25 and is three times higher than it was last week at this time.
South Florida’s three counties as well as Orange County are in the U.S. Center for Disease Control’s “high” risk level for community transmission.
CDC data shows that Florida ranks 36th for average per-capita rate of COVID cases in the U.S. with 23 per 100,000. The state is tied with Mississippi and Nebraska for the lowest deaths rate with 0.13 deaths per 100,000 people. Death reports lag behind cases by as much as a month.
As of Monday, at least 3,766,552 Floridians have been infected by COVID-19 and at least 62,264 have died.
Meanwhile, vaccinations in Florida are averaging about 83,000 doses per day in Florida, largely because of a surge in booster shots, CDC data shows. About 62.8% of Floridians are now fully vaccinated and 28% have received booster shots.
