Ocean City, MD – The summer Maryland Sire Stakes series for freshmen trotting colts and gelding and pacing fillies finished up on Wed. Aug. 28 at Ocean Downs.
The $70,000 W. W. "Pete" Shaw Memorial for trotting colts and geldings went to post as race 5. Yall Beneath Me (Googoo Gaagaa) once again went gait to wire with Russell Foster in the bike winning his fourth stake in four starts. Give Em More (Lockkeeper) finished second and Enough Already (Four Starz Robro) finishing third, time of the mile was 1:58.4. Richard Hans owns, trains and bred Yall Beneath Me.
Race 8 was the $70,000 Ronald "Doc" Banning Memorial for pacing fillies. Reinsman Eddie Davis Jr. pulled Maizee Blue (Rusty's All In) before the half to take the lead from Fire Me Up (Rusty's All In), leading to a stretch duel when Fire Me Up fought back and then I'd Be Rich (Rusty's For Real) charged down the stretch on the outside, when the clock stopped Maizee Blue held a ¾ length lead in the 1:59.4 mile.
Fire Me Up took the Place spot with I'd Be Rich the show horse. Les Givens trains the winner for owner-breeders Leslie Moore and Robert Weyforth.
The fall series of freshman sire stakes starts on Sunday September 15th and continues for 3 weeks at Rosecroft Raceway.
